Publisher's summary

Embrace the Lord's pattern for prayer. God longs for us to spend time with Him. Yet while His invitation is extravagant, too often we struggle to spend even brief moments with our Heavenly Father. For some, action has replaced prayer. For others, requests can take priority over relationship, as we try to mold God to our desires. How did the simple act of prayer become so complicated? Renowned pastor and author John MacArthur invites you to experience the art of prayer. Here John turns to our greatest spiritual mentor, Jesus Christ, as he takes an intimate, in-depth look at the Lord’s Prayer. Filled with fresh insights and practical tools for growth, Alone with God will help you rediscover the power and passion found in time spent with God. Alone with God includes a guide for both personal and group study, which features discovery questions, suggestions for prayer, and activities, all designed to connect life-changing truths with everyday living.

Deeply encouraging and convicting

I am so encouraged to approach the Lord with boldness and humility in my prayer, but am also deeply convicted to be praying in ways that honour Him. I encourage you to listen to this book, and pray that the Lord would use it to draw you nearer to Him as He has done with me.

Excellent conceptual guide to prayer

I had almost written John MacArthur off due to another book he wrote about forgiveness. The topic was approached with such a judgmental attitude that it turned me off. I decided to give him another chance with this book because I love to read about prayer and because Maurice England is one of my favorite narrators.

I was pleasantly surprised that MacArthur did such a magnificent job of presenting prayer conceptually rather than theoretically or as some sort of a step-by-step program as most authors approached it. He begins with the concept that God is always near to us, with us, and wants to hear from us. As simple as that idea may be to grasp theoretically, MacArthur did a beautiful job of making it very real to the listener. He then moves on to deal with various topics such as constant prayer, the use and abuse of memorized prayers, and the use of God's names in prayer. He does a good job of breaking things down and defining terms that other authors tend to skip over. For example, he doesn't just exhort the listener to be in constant prayer, he explains what constant prayer is and what it isn't.

I will listen to this one again, and I will consider it to be one of my more valuable resources on prayer. It would be a good book for anyone who is new to prayer or for people who have years of experience.

Extremely Useful in Todays World

I started this wondering what I was about to read, since the title only states Alone With God. Everyone that needs to understand how God works and how what he expects from His children NEEDS to read this amazing book.

Amazing book that dives into prayer

if you are struggling with praying by yourself or in front of others, you need to read this! it strengthens your confidence and explains the enormous lengths God went to bring you Jesus Christ so He could give you the power of prayer. It pleases Him to see you grow in the Lord and thank Him and ask for things in prayer. Just know that you are not alone, because He is always by your side...no matter what!!!

Great discussion on prayer but beware of Calvinism

Really enjoyed and appreciated this book very much. It was excellent walking through the points of the Lords prayer. Helped me a great deal in regards to prayer. But I was disappointed with the last chapter as it was heavy on Calvinism. I felt it was unnecessary and forced.
