Intriguing mystery, fascinating historical context

I love this series - this is the third of four, and I almost don't want to listen to the next, knowing that it's the last. The characters are strong and intriguing, the historical setting and context well explained without being over explained. Henry II is the Plantagenet King of England, and Adelia, a female doctor from Salerno reluctantly agrees to conduct one more investigation into some mysterious deaths for him. Evil outlaws and evil mother-in-laws, mad monks and lepers all play a part in this fine fine mystery. It's also beautifully read, with even the minor characters, men and women from different regions and levels of society, given voices that are distinctive and convincing without falling into irritating stereotype.

Outstanding series

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Really good story telling. Compelling characters. Beautifully written, well researched, beautifully read. I wanted more.

What did you like best about this story?

It was so moreish. I listened to it late into the night, so woke up tired. Always a sign of a good book

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did, except I had to sleep and work in between. Compulsive listening.

Any additional comments?

I read the whole series, then went looking for more. There is one based in the WW2, which no doubt I will come to soon. I read Winter Seige first, and love this writer.

Disappointed

I've read two books by Arianna Franklin, Mistress in the Art of Death series which I really enjoyed. The audible version was disappointing. The narration affected my enjoyment because I felt it was laboured and uninteresting. I won't be buying another.
