Publisher's Summary

Award-winning, Wall Street Journal best-selling author Kennedy Ryan launches a brand-new series with a Hollywood tale of wild ambition, artistic obsession, and unrelenting love.

One moment in the spotlight....

For months I stood by, an understudy waiting in the wings, preparing for my time to shine. I never imagined he would watch in the audience that night.

Canon Holt. Famous film director. Fascinating. Talented. Fine.

Before I could catch my breath, everything changed. I went from backstage Broadway to centerstage Hollywood. From being unknown to my name, Neevah Saint, on everyone’s lips.

Canon casts me in a star-studded Harlem Renaissance biopic, catapulting me into another stratosphere.

But stars shine brightest in the dead of night. Forbidden attraction, scandal, and circumstances beyond my control jeopardize my dream.

Could this one shot - the role of a lifetime, the love of a lifetime - cost me everything?

A show stopper of a book

I L♥VED Reel!

Reel has two strong women stories in it - one who is from now and one is from the past. The strength of these two women, Neevah & Dessi, is the heartbeat running throughout the pages. Both women have a story that deserves to be told. Neevah is a stand-in actress who happens to be discovered during one of her fill-in performances and chosen to portray a strong Black woman, Desi, whose story isn’t widely known.

“Do you have any idea how many Dessi Blues there are? Black artists who shaped our culture, made our music, but whose contributions have gone unacknowledge? Their stories just slipped through the cracks. People who, by all rights, should be household names, but nobody knows their names? All they have to show for what they did is a plaque in their hometown or a line on Wikipedia, if that.”

I love that Neevah & Dessi lives, sort of, mirror each other. Even though they are living in different time periods they have a lot of similarities - a forbidden romance, performers, family turmoil, traveling, etc . . .

I did a mixture of reading this book and listening to it. I've been on a listening kick this year and I wanted to make sure I listened to part of this book. I enjoyed both reading and listening to REEL. Reel is 16 hours and 21 minute audiobook.

Stunning in scope and beautifully written

I know I am not going to do this book justice with my review because I am not eloquent like that but man oh man what a book. I know it’s going to be ambitious but this goes beyond everything I thought I could expect from Kennedy. It’s stunning in its scope and the multiple subplots that she weaved. It’s a beyond any romance I have ever listen to. She brought so much knowledge to the subject matter that I feel like I am getting a masterclass in the black renaissance of the twenties. I was googling the back story as I was listening. She writes with such conviction and depth of knowledge that informs the listener as well as tells an epic love story. if you are looking for scorching love scenes she has you covered.

Then on top of all that she weaved in the critical illness subplot that blows everything out of the water. The delicate way the story handles that tells you she has done her research into the subject matter and I stan her got all that she did to educate me about it.

Jakobi and Eboni really elevates the story with their performances. Their narration deserved all the accolades. The casting for this book is perfection.

Wonderful

Loved the story. It shows what our ancestors had to deal with, how they had to leave their country to be treated as a human being.

Wow

Excellent story and narration. There are many layers to this story it kept me interested all the way through. The narration was superb. Obviously you can never go wrong with Jakobi Diem. Eboni Flowers is awesome as well and top that off with Nicole Small who is one of my favorite narrators made this book perfect.

PHENOMENAL! REEL INDEED!

Amazing plot/s- interwoven and demonstrates how the past and present collide and relate. Evidence of research into Hollywood- Black Hollywood, Black history, pays homage, highlights black love and romance, gives info on illness that affects black women, mortality ... so much!

Phenomenal!

I am writing this review after just finishing the audio of Reel, and I don't think I have the words to express how much I loved this book. I don't know why I'm surprised, because I'm familiar with Kennedy Ryan's work, and her Kingmaker Duet and Queen Move just absolutely blew me away. Reel was somehow just next-level amazing as far as I'm concerned.

Not only do we have an amazing love story between Cannon and Neevah, but Kennedy has woven in such an amazing social commentary as well, with the movie-within-the-book, the historical marginalization of black artists and cultural appropriation. These are natural themes within the book, and the romance and the story are so interwoven, so intricate and treated with such respect, similar to how the Kingmaker Duet featured the mistreatment of Native Americans.

I loved every minute of the narration by Jakobi Diem and Eboni Flowers. They captured Cannon and Neevah's spirit, their passion, Cannon's grumpiness, Neevah's unbreakable drive. A wonderful listen from beginning to end.

Wow! 5🌟

Reel was a captivating and nostalgic love story with a great historical side story. Neevah & Cannon's romance was beautiful, I enoyed every minute of it.

The narration and music for this audiobook was absolutely incredible the one of the best performances I've listened to in 2021.
