Publisher's Summary

Perfect for fans of C. Alexander London's The Wild Ones and Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

The question in this first volume is resoundingly clear: What can the peace-loving mice of Redwall Abbey do to defend themselves against Cluny the Scourge and his battle-seasoned army of rats? If only they had the sword of Martin the Warrior, they might have a chance. But the legendary weapon has long been forgotten - except, that is, by the bumbling young apprentice Matthias, who becomes the unlikeliest of heroes. Teeming with riddles, humor, unforgettable characters, and high-bounding adventure, the original Redwall is the launching point for a series that has captured the world's attention.

Nostalgic Glee

Wonderful Narrator, and a great story from my youth. These were some of the first books I worshipped as a child. Now having children of my own, I wanted to reacquaint myself with these stories before enjoying them with my own children.

Still gave me the old feelings. Can't recommend this book more. I would call this a warm fantasy epic to be enjoyed at all ages.

Narration was perfect!

Better for bedtime than original

We are glad we gave this version a try! Stuart Blinder’s narration is clearly informed by the original. Only Constance and Logalog’s voices took some getting used to. Blinder gives a wonderful performance that is perfect for bedtime listening.

We were skeptical at first, too. The original full cast recordings with the author himself narrating are wonderful and among the few full cast recordings we enjoy. But we often want to listen to Redwall as we fall asleep and the music in the original recordings jars us awake. If you’ve also had this problem, we wholeheartedly recommend this version. We hope Stuart Blinder will record more of the Redwall series!

Good for all ages

Classified as Young Adult back when I worked for a book store chain, it really is not targeted at just a young audience. I really enjoyed the book. I especially liked the use of various animal species rather than the usual humans, elves, orcs....The main character is brave and good, exactly what you want in the hero. He is successful because he respects all animals he encounters and makes friends and allies easily with sparrows, badgers, squirrels and shrews. The villain is an evil rat who leads multiple attacks on the main setting Redwall Abbey. After the first attack was repelled, I wondered what would happen to carry they next 10 hours of the story, but it never slowed.
One element I wish the author had made clearer is if these are mice sized mice or human sized mice. It is a question that nagged at me throughout. I am assuming they are not mice sized as why would sparrows settle into the roof of a mouse sized abbey?

I enjoyed this story immensely- suspense, beautiful language, classic characters - you name it. The narrator gives an amazing performance with a vast array of voices/personalities. You won’t be disappointed!

Loved this as a kid

Came back to it as an adult, and though it's different than I remember, still a wonderful journey. The only real problem I had was how Constance the Badger was voiced. He made her sound like a wizened old woman rather than the most powerful and terrifying creature in Redwall.
