Publisher's summary

A thousand years ago, an alien invasion set humanity back to the Iron Age. Slowly, we recovered, colonizing the Solar System in peace. And discovered that an unknown force is stopping us from exploring any farther. But before the cause can be discovered, a slow-burning conspiracy threatens to explode into System-wide war. With enemies at home and in the darkness beyond, a team of unlikely heroes-a janitor, a mercenary, an asteroid miner, and a pirate-are the only ones who can avert a second apocalypse. This set includes the first three books of the newly-finished REBEL STARS series.

Another wonderful set of stories!

I really enjoyed a universe where our space-settling kin don't start out with inertial dampeners and laser technology, and where those advanced technologies that do exist may have come from our enemies.

As always, however, Robertson's strength is in creating relatable characters, no matter how far the setting is removed from our reality. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Monotone narrator

Hard to tell if all of the characters are emotionless robots or not with the dull narrator

1000 Years After the Breakers What Happened?

Big fan of both Ray Chase and Edward W. Robertson, having enjoyed all 9 books in the Breakers Series, so I looked forward to these books carrying the saga forward. I know that 1000 years had passed so all the characters from the Breakers would be long dead but these books took awhile to get going. It seemed like the most interesting and important thing that happened in all three of these books occurred right at the end of the 3rd book, the return of the Swimmers and the introduction of a 2nd alien species. Which creatures (spoiler alert) we never get to meet in any way because we get caught up in some corporate space wars.
True, Robertson had to establish a whole new set of worlds and characters, (which he did with the Locker with its gangs and military spacers and the hive with its young genius billionaire and techno nerds) but that took three books to accomplish. So maybe we get to meet the new aliens and find out why they don't want us traveling beyond the solar system in book 3?
I certainly hope so, and that audible will get the issues with further books in the series resolved.
As always, kudos for the fierce, powerful female characters and the totally cool with that and equally interesting male characters.
I guess I'm spoiled by Robertson's incredible feat of creating the Breakers amazing journey and I miss those guys! In any case, this mild disappointment won't keep me from reading more Robertson or from downloading book 3 if it becomes available for audible and in the mean time starting on the 3rd series of Robertson books available here.
BTW Ray Chase is the perfect reader for these books. All the characters are given unique voices. His energy rises and falls with the action. He's always got good pronunciation and genius understanding of how the lines should read. In 12 books, there's only one place where I would have read the line differently. Plus his female voices sound female without sounding like imitation women. Big fan!

Great start to an interesting series

Reviewing publishers pack - books 0, 1, and 2 of this six book series. In a nutshell, I really enjoyed all three of these books, and I’m looking forward to the next three books.

I suspect that book 0 was written after book one, but I’m not certain of that. In any event, it fits in perfectly, and it tells the backstory of these characters, but it’s not filler at all. It’s a very engrossing story developing the characters who continue on in the later books. I love character development, and Edward W. Robertson certainly gives that to us here.

I’ll give a big tip of my hat to the author because each of the books is a complete the story within the book, and you don’t have to buy the next book to see what happens. Your do want to buy the next book, though, because the overarching plot continues, the characters are great and you do want to see where those characters go. I hate it when an author basically cuts the story in half forcing the reader to buy the next book to find out what happens. That’s lazy riding. This author will cause me to buy all six of the books, because I’m engrossed in the overall story and I love the characters.

I also am thankful for the excellent narration by Ray Chase. Great job! A note about the narration of the swimmers character: one reviewer gave up on the books quickly, because he could not handle the swimmers‘ voice. It would be irritating if that was the general narration for the book, but the swimmers narration occurs for no more than a combined 10 or 15 minutes in the entire book, so I didn’t find it problematic at all, and in fact, it was a great contrast in style.

I loved it

The way it's written allows the story to play smooth in my head. Perfect Narrator too! I love the story of Sid and Kansas.

Enjoyed the inclusion of a complete Rada backstory

After ordering this, I quickly realized that I had previously purchased Books 1&2 of this series. While I could have requested a refund, I decided to listen to Book 0, Rebel, based on the strength of Edward W. Robertson's writing skills and enjoyed it so much that I decided to continue to listen to books 1&2 and forget the refund, it was that good.

If you haven't listened to this series previously, I highly recommend it if you are interested in s skillfully written and engaging story and having the pleasure of a top-tier narrator in Ray Chase performance.

I wish the other books were recorded already

I enjoyed the books but kept finding it frustrating that the later books have not been recorded yet. I know the author is working on it, but I am lacking in patience.

Solid Space Adventure But Weird Narrator Choices

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Ray Chase?

Nick Podehl.

Any additional comments?

Really don't understand the choices Chase (or his director) made. Narration itself is fine, but the character voices are so affected and oddly intoned, it makes things just plain weird.
