Publisher's summary

"Lush and intricate, Theriault breathes new life into the tale as old as time." (Victoria Aveyard, number one New York Times best-selling author of the Red Queen series)

Torn between two worlds, neither of which she truly belongs...

Happily ever after is only the beginning as Belle takes on the responsibility of becoming queen and learns to balance duty, love, and sacrifice, all while navigating dark political intrigue - and a touch of magic.

It's 1789, and France is on the brink of revolution. Belle has broken the enchantress' curse, restoring the Beast to his human form and bringing life back to their castle in the principality of Aveyon. But in Paris, the fires of change are burning, and it's only a matter of time before the rebellion arrives on their doorstep.

Not so very long ago, Belle dreamed of leaving her provincial home for a life of adventure. Now she finds herself living in a lush palace, torn between her past as a commoner and her future as royalty. While Belle grapples with her newfound position, there are those who would do anything to keep her from power. When she stumbles across a magic mirror that holds a dire warning, Belle wants nothing more than to ignore the mysterious voice calling her to accept a crown she never desired. But violent factions of the revolution may already be lurking within her own castle, and doing nothing would endanger everything she holds dear. With the fate of her country, her love, and her life at stake, Belle must decide if she is ready to embrace her own strength - and the magic that ties her to so many female rulers before her - to become the queen she is meant to be.

Rebel Rose continues the story of one of Disney's most beloved classics, Beauty and the Beast. It is the first in the Queen's Council series, an empowering fairy tale reimagining of the Disney Princesses - and the real history behind their stories - like you've never seen before.

Revolution: A tale as old as time

Rebel Rose is the first book in the Queens Counsel series. This first book is also a sequel to my favorite Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast.

It is the later years of the eighteenth century and after having helped America to fight it's own bloody revolution, France finds itself sitting on a powder keg made of hot tempers and apathetic rulers.

It is into this powder keg that Belle frees the Prince of a small and long forgotten principality.

I loved seeing my favorite characters again and the historical context adds so much to the original movie. Without the curse Leo, yes he has a name now, wouldn't have stood a chance at surviving the people's uprising.

I don't know enough about the actual French revolution to speak to the historical accuracy, but as a sequel to Beauty and the Beast, it does a great job of hitting all the right notes.

If this were made into a movie, it would have to be live action, and bringing back Emma Watson and Dan Stevens for this, would more than justify the unnecessary reboot.

The narrator does a fantastic job of not only giving each character a unique voice, but she goes the extra mile to mimic the original voice actors of their cartoon counterparts.

My one and only criticism is the villain of the story. This is a mystery story, for the most part, so no spoilers, but I don't think the villain had strong enough motives or justification for their actions. It's almost like the villain's plot was shoehorned in because some editor didn't think the bloodiest revolution in history Was high enough stakes.

A great follow up to Belle’s journey

I think this series deserves more love. I love the concept and how realistic the princesses tales feel: their setting is a real place in a real historic time period done very well. I throughly enjoyed Belle’s ride through Brittany Pressley’s voice (I adore her from American Royals and Sadie). Not a mind blowing art piece, but a very good one.
