Publisher's summary

From the internationally best-selling author of Nefertitiand Cleopatra's Daughter comes the breathtaking story of Queen Lakshmi - India's Joan of Arc - who against all odds defied the mighty British invasion to defend her beloved kingdom.

When the British Empire sets its sights on India in the mid-nineteenth century, it expects a quick and easy conquest. India is fractured and divided into kingdoms, each independent and wary of one another, seemingly no match for the might of the English. But when they arrive in the Kingdom of Jhansi, the British army is met with a surprising challenge.

Instead of surrendering, Queen Lakshmi raises two armies - one male and one female - and rides into battle, determined to protect her country and her people. Although her soldiers may not appear at first to be formidable against superior British weaponry and training, Lakshmi refuses to back down from the empire that is determined to take away the land she loves.

Told from the unexpected perspective of Sita - Queen Lakshmi's most favored companion and most trusted soldier in the all-female army - Rebel Queen shines a light on a time and place rarely explored in historical fiction. In the tradition of her best-selling novel, Nefertiti, and through her strong, independent heroines fighting to make their ways in a male-dominated world, Michelle Moran brings nineteenth-century India to rich, vibrant life.

Very entertaining

I enjoyed this audio book very much. Learned a lot about the history of India's culture in the 1800's and the struggle with British rule. The story lagged at times, just enough for me to give 4 stars. The reader is amazing and her voice is a highlight. Her accent is beautiful and she doesn't over exaggerate the character voices--a real pet peeve of mine with audio books. Overall a wonderful book for my daily commute.

Pronunciation of names and places helped me

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It really helped me with the pronunciation of the names and places.

Any additional comments?

I loved the book! It is the first time I read anything dealing with the history of India. I want to read more historical Indian novels.

Sneha Mathan is great!

This book was pretty enjoyable. As a Indian-American, it was obvious this book was written by a white woman/ or a person not of this culture for people who are not familiar with Indian/ Hindu Culture as it is overly explained.

Sneha Mathan did an amazing job, as usual. Her pronunciation, and slight accent is on point. I really enjoy her work now.

Over all the story was great reminding the world there were strong women in India who stood up to the patriarchy and defied it. There was still that underlying oppression as deemed by the cultural traditions that people sought to follow. Also colonization and the harms of it were clear, but could have been more powerful I feel. I have many mixed feelings about the book, in general, because it was written by a non-brown person. I was glad they used the right terminology, did their research, and was slightly accurate.

Word of 1000 Colors

This historical fiction helped transport me to another time and a world of 1000 colors. It is beautiful, tragic and deeply human. I love Michelle Moran’s emphasis on strong and dynamic females from history. The narration was fantastic. I found this story to be provoking and inspiring. I absolutely recommend!

Brilliant

Michelle Moran's Rebel Queen was brilliant! I had never heard before heard of the Queen's story and I was so intrigued. The attention to detail in this book made me feel as if I were right in the midst of the story. Definitely recommend this title.

Fascinating

Moran paints a lush, detailed portrayal of how life was for a young, Indian village girl. A world devoid of many options if you had no dowry and yet education was the ultimate pass to freedom.

I loved the intricate descriptions of both the characters and their surroundings. A great book to bring history to life in those times.
