Publisher's Summary

Protect the empire at all costs,
Eliminate any threats,
And defeat our enemies.
For years, I’ve accepted these responsibilities to keep my family safe.
I’ve given up my life in exchange for their happiness.
Until Gianna tore through the barbed wire surrounding my black heart and showed me what I’d been missing.
She’s beautiful, naïve, and dangerous.
A liability to everything I’ve built.
But I broke my own rules, took a bite of the forbidden fruit.
Now that one taste will mean the death of her.
And me.

This one is my favorite of the series

This one is my favorite of the series. There’s real romance here, instead of more-than-lust. Alek is in love right at the beginning of the book, and you can feel it throughout the story. It’s a light in the middle of all the darkness that is the life of a mafia boss.

I enjoyed Alek’s character. He’s the older brother, the one who takes responsibility, the one who sacrifices his life--metaphorically, and maybe literally--for the people around him. He feels for everyone. But he isn’t above some rash and dirty violence in the process of protecting the people he loves.

Gianna seemed a bit like the innocent girl at first, but the more you read about her, the more you see the strength hidden beneath. She’s an interesting character too. And the way her relationship with Alek evolves makes for a beautiful story.

And again, since it’s a mafia romance, you have a lot of violence. And this time, it’s more than gunfights. Alek gets his hands dirty. It has a kind of cinematographic quality that I appreciate.

Since it’s a standalone novel, and that any important plot element from the previous books are repeated, if you have to read/listen to only one of the books of this series, it should be this one.
