On an ordinary September day, 12-year-old Jack is swept away in a freak neighborhood flood. His parents and younger sister are left to wrestle with the awful questions: How could God let this happen? Can we ever be happy again? They each fall into the abyss of grief in different ways. And in the days and months to come, they each find their faltering way toward peace. In Rare Bird, Anna Whiston-Donaldson unfolds a mother's story of loss that leads, in time, to enduring hope. With this unforgettable account of a family's love and longing, Anna will draw you deeper into a divine goodness that keeps us - beyond all earthly circumstances - safe.

I'm sure my short review will not give this book justice, it was honest, eloquent and heart-wrenching. A window into family life full of love and loss. I literally cried while listening to it at the grocery store! But, despite the sadness it was not draining to listen to.. it leaves you with a sense of peace

beautiful, absolutely beautiful

This is a courageously honest account of a woman's struggles with the grief of her loss and her anger with God at allowing it to happen. Written based on her blogs over the first years of her loss, it is a frank chronicle of the initial wish to give up thru to a new time of thriving. She shared insights in being kind to one's grieving self and what she and her family did to help each other.

Beautiful memorial to her son. Encouraging, real, and healing.
Allowed me to understand that everyone grieves differently.

To grow up and mature simply means we will reach many milestones through physical development, educational and situational experiences, and even loss. Big loss. We will all experience it in one way or another. You can lose as a participant in a spelling bee or a relay race. You can lose a favorite toy or an earring. At some point, growth will include the loss of a beloved pet, a parent, a sibling, a friend, a child.
This story is more about the growth that is gained after a family loses a child. Don’t be sad. The writer of this book describes her grief honestly and vividly, and is just as succinct when she tells her readers of the miracles following the loss of her boy and the growth her family experiences. It’s a beautiful story. It can happen to any one of us at any time, but not everyone is as lucky as she is to experience so many beautiful messages of love from their growth experience of loss.
I would recommend this book to anyone perhaps 15 years-old and above because we ALL have a lot to learn from it.
