  • 147: Recognize, Decompress, Stabilize: Managing a Pneumothorax with Trauma Pete
    Oct 10 2025

Hear why this patient went from stable to crashing in minutes, how delayed recognition changed the course of care, what diagnostics and assessments could have caught earlier. Trauma Pete breaks down the tell-tale signs, how it differs from a simple pneumothorax, and why it's so easy to miss in trauma patients.

In this episode, you’ll learn which patients are the most at risk, how to spot tension pneumothorax early, and why having a systematic approach to decompression make all the difference!

    • Presentation of a stable, post-arrest patient
    • The patient's rapid decline and first interventions
    • Why they misread the signs of tension pneumothorax

    Sep 26 2025

This is one of those cases that tests you in every way as a nurse. A toddler is pulled out of a pool and rushed to the ER, unresponsive and deteriorating fast. Sarah thank you for being such a wonderful advocate and educator. I'm an ICU nurse of a little less than 5 years and I love listening to your podcast. I'm inspired by your ability to advocate and communicate and I learn so much from your stories! Your podcast was recommended to me from a friend and I now share it with everyone I can. You make learning fun and palletable and offer a model of how to be persistent and clear without being abrasive or rude. I'm inspired by your communication skills and learn so much from this platform. Thank you again for putting it together :)

Educate and advocate. Sarah will inspire you to be the best you can for your patients.

“My gut feeling was the one that saved her. Charge nurse refused to call the hospitalist and when she finally did, the NP hospitalist placed orders without assessing the patient. The sitter did not see anyone come in the room except me every 15 min to check on the patient. At this point I was livid and finally got everyone at the bedside just in the nick of time before the patient coded. I wish I had listened to this podcast and I would have been on the phone with the night supervisor."

Had similar experience post-op hysterectomy
