Publisher's Summary
As a parent, you can't make friends for your children, nor can you prevent them from ever feeling hurt or upset. But with the right guidance, you can support them in learning how to solve problems, cope with feelings, and build satisfying relationships.
Raising Emotionally and Socially Healthy Kids gives you access to the same practical advice and actionable plans that Dr. Kennedy-Moore - an in-demand psychologist and author who serves on the advisory board for Parents magazine - shares with clients in her Princeton, New Jersey, practice. Drawing from the her extensive clinical experience - as well as personal experience as a mother of four - these 12 lectures provide a deeper understanding of your child's development and ways to address common stumbling blocks with compassion.
In the first half, you'll focus on emotional intelligence and the pivotal role parents can play in helping children understand and cope with their feelings. You'll discover strategies for managing early-childhood meltdowns; simple techniques to inspire cooperation; constructive ways to deal with back-talk, aggression, and unkind behavior; methods to help children cope with anxiety; and more.
In the latter half, you'll turn to social intelligence and the challenges children face in making friends, plus practical ways you can guide them through the process. Here, you'll explore how you can support your child in getting along with others; being a good sport; handling conflicts; dealing with bullying; and coping with gossip and cliques.
You'll conclude with a candid discussion of friendship in the digital age, looking at video game playing and the relatively new but troubling phenomena of cyberbullying and "Facebook depression".

Too much detail?
I've done several Great Courses, but this one was difficult to get through. I feel like it just went in to too much detail on people and facts that I didn't really care about. Lincoln's Secretary's Doctor's Wife's Cousin's favorite meal, and that sort of thing. Not all of the lectures were like that, but some just bored me to death with too much detail.
I actually stopped this one 3 separate times and did a whole separate book, then came back to this one.
And there is an applause machine before and after each lecture.... that is so bizarre. Why? Why do you need to put a clap-track in an Great Courses lecture?

Just another parenting book
This wasn't a bad book but I've read a lot of parenting books. I like to learn new things and this one was pretty generic and along the same lines as most of the rest. If it's your first parenting book I think it's probably not a bad book! If you've read a bunch of parenting books I would skip this one.

Simple steps yet so meaningful
Excellent narration by Dr. Eileen Kennedy-Moore. I was able to connect to her voice, reflect during her pause, smile at her personal experiences and trust her professional approach.
The content was a well balanced mixture of old and new.
"Old" approach as we already put them into practise. It was comforting to hear and also presented sometimes with interesting research.
New part is expected and was presented and back up with research and valuable personal experiences.
It takes time to change old habits. It was a perfect balance of old and new for me. I don't feel overwhelmed by the changes I am willing to make.
My boys turn 8 and 6, six months ago and I needed a refresher to share with my wife and feel more confident about supporting our children in being emotionally and socially healthy human beings. This audio lectures are definitely helpful.
