Publisher's Summary

Tom Clancy's "genius for big, compelling plots" and his "natural narrative gift" ( The New York Times Magazine) have established him as one of the preeminent storytellers of our time. In this most extraordinary novel, Rainbow Six, Clancy goes beyond anything he has done before.

At its heart is John Clark, a master of secret operational missions, and newly named the head of an international task force dedicated to combating terrorism. Clark tries to figure out where a recent string of terrorist attacks is heading, but there is no way to predict the real threat: a group of terrorists like none the world has ever encountered, a group so extreme that their success could literally mean the end of life on this earth as we know it.

GREAT BOOK! (the narrator isn't that bad)

I was real nervous about purchasing this book due to the issues everyone seems to have with the narrator. I took a chance, and let me tell you...GREAT BOOK!!!!! The narrator is not as nearly as bad as everyone is making him out to be. He is not the best, but I followed him without a problem and he DEFINITELY did not ruin the story! (It's only a book people! Being just a little to picky!) The story was compelling, the plot got better and better with every moment and the there was never a dull point. If you like military or spy novels, this is the book for you!

Narrarator was horrible.

This review has nothing to do with the quality of the book itself. I could not finish listening to it because the reader read in sporatic bursts. It was if he was reading the book for the first time and was unsure what tone to use or at what pace to read the passages.

One of the worst abridgments that I've heard

I guess I will have to buy the book. This has got to be one of the worst abridgements that I've ever heard. The plot is all over the place and the reader, is awful. I wasn't sure that it could get worse then having Dennis Boutsikaris as a reader. David Dukes reads a lot like William Shatner and his characters, especially the women as noted in other reviews, are horrible. Every women character has an annoyingly deep and "breathy" voice. Had these characters been drag queens, this would have been fine. As for the story, it has a lot of potential. Lots of Special Ops stuff. Action from the get-go but I felt like I was missing half of the story. This seems to be one of those books which should never had been abridged.

Short But Good, My Favorite Tom Clancy Story

To me Tom Clancy in general tends to be a bit "dry". Lots of techno-babble, and light on story, and many of his stories crawl along. Rainbow Six is different. It starts right out of the gate exciting, and doesn't let up. As a result, the book is actually pretty short, I actually wish it were longer, but it's a lot of fun. Tons of action.

Typical special ops - a warning.

Ok, first off, I love everything fictional Tom Clancy has written. This book is no different. But a warning, if you arn't into special ops, their weapons, or their school of thought, not your book. If you like the Jack Ryan series and want to try something with a bit more action, this is your book. The story is told well, the acting is above par. Overall, about par for Tom Clancy.

UNHAPPY

Unfortunately nowhere in the description was it listed that this was the abridged version of the title.

A lot missing.

I’ve read the original book, heard other narrations, and even followed along with this one. There are many differences. The narrator leaves out entire paragraphs and lots of plot points. Good read though.

Awful voices

This was the 5th Tom Clancy I’ve listened to, loved the others and wanted to finish this before moving on to the next book. That’s the only reason I kept going after multiple times getting really annoyed at the character voices by the narrator. If you find a different option, pick it!

Pass on this book

I’m a big fan of the Rom Clancy books but this was the worst . Terrible narration and story line.

Great listen

Good book but the different voices could do with improving. I read the original book but I drive now and enjoyed listening to it again.

Don't do accents.

The narrator has a great voice and should stick to using his natural accent. When he tried to do British or other accents it was all over the place. Didn't stop me enjoying it though.

Brilliant story!

Missing story line

This is not the full book. Unlike other Tom Clancy audiobooks this has had a large part of the details missed during the reading.

Okay

Story ok. Accents used by the narrator were a bit hit and miss. I have listened to another John Clark story and the narrator was better.

Disapoited

What three words best describe David Dukes’s voice?

Will never go for book narrated by David Dukes, story maybe ok but read in his voice puts me off.

Any additional comments?

I thought bit more from Tom Clancy.

Good...but was probably much better 10 years ago?

I'd never quite managed to read this book when it was released about 10 or 12 years ago, but I know it was a huge bestseller (they even made a computer game of it!)

So I took the plunge when I saw it on Audible. Admittedly, this was an abridged version - and there's always a risk that what you get in that format is a poor version of an excellent title.

This book tends to end up as several terrorist/ hostage rescue/ building assault pitched battles tagged on the back of one another, with perhaps 10 minutes 'plot' inbetween. It's quite possible that the plot sections are what have been abridged; I struggle to see how this book could have been so popular in the mainstream when at least 75% is dedicated to action episodes.

Now, don't get me wrong - I had a fairly good idea this was what I would expect (there was a computer game after all!), and the action sequences are very well done - I think one particular siege lasted over 1 hour of audio time, and it really helped you to imagine the building, the strategy, and the thoughts of both sides in the engagement.

It's just a shame that the book only seems to be these action sequences - the plot is both wafer thin and terribly brief.

On top of that of course is that the book has sadly aged quite quickly. International terrorism in 1998 was seen very differently to what we experience on a regular basis in the modern world, and it means certain actions are either unrealistic or, worse, a little too vivid.

Overall? It's really not that bad! But this version is a Boys Own action romp with well-scripted set piece battles; it's not a deep and meaningful plot with wholesome characters and thought-provoking dialogue!
