Publisher's summary

In New York Times best-selling author Richard Castle's newest novel, an illegal immigrant falls from the sky and NYPD Homicide Detective Nikki Heat's investigation into his death quickly captures the imagination of her boyfriend, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jameson Rook. When he decides to work the case with Heat as his next big story, Nikki is at first happy to have him ride along. Yes, she must endure Rook's usual wild conspiracy speculations and adolescent wisecracks, but after reuniting following his recent assignment abroad, she's glad for the entertainment, the chance to bounce ideas, and just to be close to him again and feel the old spark rekindle. But when Rook's inquiry concludes that Detective Heat has arrested the wrong man for the murder, everything changes.

Balancing her high stakes job with a complicated romance has been a challenge ever since Nikki fell for the famous reporter. Now, her relationship lurches from mere complexity into sharp conflict over the most high-risk case of her career. Set against the raging force of Hurricane Sandy as it pounds New York, Heat battles an ambitious powerbroker, fights a platoon of urban mercenaries, and clashes with the man she loves. Detective Heat knows her job is to solve murders. She just worries that solving this one will be the death of her relationship.

A good story, not a great one.

A decent story, but Nikki seems very alonewitty through most of it which is a bummer. Also, another drawback is there doesn't seem to be as much of the banter.

Best Castle

This was the longest and best Castle book I’ve ever read. The extra time allows extra to develop both Characters and story.

If you live the show Castle you will enjoy this book

Fun listen to. I loved the show and this was a fun read. I do t know many cops that actually get into as many perilous situations but still fun as a work of fiction.

Not too shabby

Like all the Nikki Heat's, this one was hard to put down. Well written, funny and thoughtful.

Nailed it!

This is the best in the series so far. The narrator is wonderful! He has the same intonation as Nathan. The twists in this book kept you guessing up till the end.

Always felt like something was missing.

I don't know of another way to phrase it but it always felt like there was something missing from the story. Perhaps it was the lack of red herrings. Perhaps it was the surface nature of each individual you meet in the book beyond the core. (With a notable exception for Capt. Wally Irons.) Perhaps it was something else, such as a new ghost writer or a shorter deadline. What I can tell you is that while the story was delightful and fun, the tension didn't really feel that tense despite the obvious mechanics (hurricane) meant to help spur the tension on. The language also didn't feel as cheeky as previous books and efforts. Essentially, it fell short of the previous novels and the warmth of the show that the other books had.

Don't let that discourage you though. It's a delightful tale of peril and its pacing as a thriller is a pretty good clip but it just won't knock those socks from your feet.

So Fun

Any additional comments?

Once again the Heat books were funny and played on the Castle characters in a way Castle and Fire Fly fans will enjoy. I enjoyed the Junior editors notes at the end that tied the books to the show..
