Publisher's summary

Rafael, king of the wererats, must fight to the death to defend his crown. He wants Anita Blake, one of his closest allies, with him as he faces an opponent unlike any he’s faced before. He will ask Anita to risk everything to be at his side....

But some of the wererats fear that Rafael depends too much on Anita and her ties to the vampires. They believe that there is only room in America for one supernatural king, and Rafael will turn them into nothing more than food for the bloodsuckers.

Among his enemies, a new challenger has arisen who is younger, hungrier, and has dark secrets that could destroy both the wererats and the vampires. Rafael will go into the magical heart of his people to find the power and violence that he needs to save them all, or die trying.

Rafael

love getting back in the action. down side why does anita blake hate her gender so much it as bad. you can female and badass without being gender hater. Plus is it because you made your money in career but no longer give a shit about your readers by destroying your chracter. if you don’t want to write than retire. you found a world that your readers love but destroying it is not cool. reminds of jk rawling after her harry potter series . i dont count curse child because it didn’t really come from her imagination it came from a play that she add to later to turn into a book.

LKH has done it again

I got so lost in the characters the book went way too fast. K.Alexis did a fantastic job giving each character their own voice. At the end though I feel like I have more questions than answers about Raphael and the Rodere. He would be worth another book easily.

Inconsistent performance

I’ve been a fan of this series since the very first Anita Blake book, Guilty Pleasures, was released. I enjoyed the story and, as always, I eagerly await the next installment. By and large, I also enjoy Kimberly Alexis’ performances in the audio versions as well. Having said that, this time Ms. Alexis changed a couple of things that caused a bit of distraction from the story, which is a pet peeve of mine. In previous installments, she performed the character of Claudia with no accent. This time, Ms. Alexis gave her a Hispanic accent. In at least one previous installment, she read the character of Narcissus with a British accent. This time she did not. I’m sure most listeners would not consider this a big deal but, for me, anything that distracts from the story is a bother.

Ends abruptly

good book but it ends abruptly and could have been better. SPOILER*** how is it the all powerful master of beasts with the mother of darkness is taken out by some rats and boom it's over? when can we expect more. hopefully the next book is better. seemed this one was rushed.

If

I liked the glimpse into the Rat pack, but really wish the author would quit rehashing old crap. Seriously! Give us a fresh story, not constant recaps of prior stories. It is as if the author thinks her readers have short term memories or dementia. Ugh! Not sure why I continue with this series.
