Publisher's summary

Under Milk Wood is Dylan Thomas's undisputed and unforgettable masterpiece - an affectionate, but hilarious portrait of a small Welsh town. The classic 1954 recording, featuring a perfect cast led by Richard Burton as "First Voice", is rightly considered to be definitive. This collection also includes two earlier radio programs: Return Journey to Swansea and Quite Early One Morning, read by Dylan Thomas and others. Enjoyable in their own right, they also provide a fascinating insight into the process that led towards Under Milk Wood.

A great work and its predecessors, unidentified

If you could sum up Under Milk Wood and Other Plays in three words, what would they be?

Brilliant, humanistic, witty

What did you like best about this story?

This is Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" in a Welsh version. It's suffused with wit and charm. The "plot" is everyday life in a quiet place haunted by the soul of its past, which make the town at Llareggub ("Buggerall" spelled backwards) Hill what it was, is, and presumably will always be. The "foreign" people and setting with their universal lives add up to experiences we can all identify with.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

The narrators were excellent, but ignorantly unidentified as to who played which parts.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely.

Any additional comments?

The "other plays" are unidentified, as are their casts, but they are obvious snatches and early attempts to creating this "radio play." It's a pity their dates and reasons for writing are omitted, as are their names and the dates they were written.

These omissions are why the review didn't deserve an overall fifth star.

Thrilled to find it on Audible

My parents owned this on vinyl back in the 1960's and it achieved cult status in our household so I was thrilled to find this full version featuring Richard Burton on Audible. Perhaps as someone who has spent time in South Wales it has more resonance for me but I would be surprised if anyone interested in dramatic prose or poetry couldn't find something to enjoy about this lovely, nostalgic cameo of life in a Welsh village.
