Martin Sheen
Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home. Thanks to Martin Sheen’s performance and the voices of ordinary Americans throughout this Audible Original, listeners can feel what life was like during a disruptive and uncertain period of American history. Martha Little is the Executive Producer, and Dan Gediman is the series producer of The Home Front.
Note: The Home Front contains mature and sensitive themes.

An early foray into developing original content for Audible lands solidly in this radio style documentary of life in America during WWII. Martin Sheen's narration anchors this series of 8 episodes that takes us from the beginnings of WWII when America was not a participant in combat through to the early post war years. Compelling and original the documentary draws heavily on real life stories gathered by the Rosie the Riveter project that lends a Ken Burns feel to the drama. Recommended. The Home Front

From radio broadcasts during that period to eyewitness accounts, we can see what the intensity and immensity that people experienced with regards to a new World War.
It hits hard, sometimes overly so, on the society that lived through this great conflict, but it gives you perspectives that need to be heard and felt. Mr. Sheen does a great job narrating.

The Manhattan Project was in there. The shortages of everything from food to gasoline and rationing. One of the last chapters dealt with PTSD. Many chapters dealt on racism and sexism, which was difficult to hear but needed also. One of the craziest things that I heard was that women were asked to keep some of their bacon fat for making bombs....who knew.
In short, from A to Z, almost everything was covered on the Homefront. I'm glad I spent the time listening and learning.
Many things that I never knew about WWII
