Interview: Bestselling author Jennifer Keishin Armstrong explores the huge impact this series made -- on the culture and individuals like her -- when it hit the zeitgeist 20 years ago.

I feel like my big theme for this book overall was the idea of the power of women telling their own stories.

Publisher's summary

By the best-selling author of Seinfeldia, a fascinating retrospective of the iconic and award-winning television series Sex and the City, to coincide with the show’s 20th anniversary.

When Candace Bushnell started writing her “Sex and the City” column for the New York Observer, she didn’t think anyone beyond the Upper East Side would care about her adventures among the Hamptons-hopping media elite. But her struggles with singlehood struck a chord, making her a citywide - and soon nationwide - sensation.

Beverly Hills, 90210 creator Darren Star brought Bushnell’s vision to an even wider audience when he adapted the column for an HBO series. His four main characters - Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha - forever branded the actresses who took on the roles, redefined women’s relationship to sex, and elevated the perception of singlehood. With their fashion-forward lifestyle, they launched a barrage of trends, from fabric flower accessories to Manolo Blahnik shoes to Cosmopolitan cocktails.

Sex and the City and Us is the story of how a columnist, two gay men - Darren Star and fellow executive producer Michael Patrick King - and a writers’ room full of women used their own poignant, hilarious, and humiliating stories to launch a cultural phenomenon, pushing the boundaries of television and igniting a national conversation about single women and sex in the process. While the show’s feminist merits continue to fuel debate, it taught viewers - male and female, gay and straight - about sex and demonstrated that single women could support each other through life’s tribulations, even as men came and went.

Featuring exclusive new interviews with the cast and writers, including star Sarah Jessica Parker, creator Darren Star, executive producer Michael Patrick King, and author Candace Bushnell, Sex and the City and Us brings us behind the scenes for a nostalgic look at a TV series that changed the way women everywhere see themselves.

ok

It was really interesting to get the back story of the show. It got really weird halfway through when she started skewering the show for not being feminist enough. I think it was the context and maybe the verbiage used - I dunno, but it made me feel uncomfortable like being at someone's house when they start yelling at their partner. It was odd. I did like it overall though.

Clinical

The book comes off almost clinical. There is no information about the beloved series. But it does stir fond memories of the show.

The audio sample made me think that this book was about a woman and her own journey to New York, after leaving her fiancé. We never return to this story at all. Rather, this book is a documentary about "Sex and the City" TV show.

It was nice to team this book with the "i heart" series by Lindsey Kelk, to make it more bearable. However, this is not worth the credit!

I watched a few clips from Miss Mojo and The Talko about SATC and found those clips to be more interesting. The information is more or less the same, with more information to be consumed on YouTube in a shorter span of time.

It was interesting to find out that director, Michael Patrick King, not to be confused with Larry King, bought out the show from Darren Star. I guess this is why there is suddenly a lot of Jewish content towards the end of the show.
