Publisher's Summary

The Sunday Times best-selling memoir from the Tour de France cyclist who lifts the lid on his drug use and return to sport.

By his 18th birthday David Millar was living and racing in France, sleeping in rented rooms, tipped to be the next English-speaking Tour winner. A year later he'd realised the dream and signed a professional contract. He perhaps lived the high life a little too enthusiastically - he broke his heel in a fall from a roof after too much drink and before long the pressure to succeed had tipped over into doping.

Here, in a full and frank autobiography, David Millar recounts the story from the inside: he doped because 'cycling's drug culture was like white noise', and because of peer pressure. 'I doped for money and glory in order to guarantee the continuation of my status.' Five years on from his arrest, Millar is clean and reflective and holds nothing back in this account of his dark years.

Fascinating

Exceeded my expectations.
Although I am a cycling fan, even if I wasn’t I think I still would have loved this book. Very interesting and at many emotional moments.

Amazing account of a professional cyclist

I love watching David Millar as commentator and pundent on the Tour de France and this book gives you more insight into why he has such a great wealth of knowledge and is such a engaging sports personality. This story of his life as a professional cyclist, gives you an interesting account into what it meant to be in a professional sport where morals and support were none existent and swept under the carpet, to come back and want to make change from cheating, his knowledge and how he helped change the sport makes his story one to listen to. Good narration and a lot of heart felt moments that had me a little teary at times. Great for any sport enthusiast, cycling lover or someone who likes real life stories.

can't believe the narrator wasn't David miller

The narrator speaks so much like David Millar it's uncanny.
the book - it's good, good story, insightful into the world of cycling and doping. at times it can come across as David seems to portray himself as the victim of his own doping / choices - apart from that good book

Interesting take on doping in cycling

Great insight into how a cyclist starts doping. The performance is too tense and at times fails to express the lighter parts of the story.

Excellent

Gritty thought provoking and honest. A great book about a great cyclist. Much to ponder on. I hope similar magnificent talents are better supported in the current era.

Good book spoiled by the narration

This book was spoiled for me by the narrator reading, throughout the entire book, in an inappropriate, breathless fashion, pausing every few words as if every sentence was some sort of climax. Disappointing treatment of an otherwise excellent book.

Fascinating story. Great narration

Brilliantly narrated. I felt like I was listening to Millar himself much of the time.

It's not black and white

Great story well told. Excellent narration.
David Millers story is not unique but this book is unique and hopefully educates many as to the dark side of cycling. Highly recommended for cycling fans and lovers of professional sport.
