A dark, riveting series about a thief

Queen of Thieves is a dark, riveting series about a girl growing up in a world of criminals and becoming a master thief. The stories are dark with beloved characters dying cruel deaths at the drop of the hat.

Recommended for mature readers due to violence and sexual content.

The narrator of the audiobooks does a very good job bringing the books to life.

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Young girl raised by thieves...

I stumbled across this as a box set and thought to give it a try. very happy I did. the story moves from one mishap to adventure. reminds me of the Lies of Locke Lamore.

One of the best fantasy trilogies of the new teens

THE QUEEN OF THIEVES series follows Illana from her status as a young girl sold by her father to cover his debts to her rise to become the greatest thief of the Night Guild. The Night Guild is a Dungeons and Dragons-esque Thieves Guild that wields all the power in its home city but for their archenemy in the Duke and his Thief-finders. Poor Illana goes through the ringer as she's subjected to numerous brutal lessons in the unfairness and cruelty of the world. She loses friends left and right and suffers indignities that go unpunished because the Night Guild is, well, a bunch of criminals. Illana eventually learns to play the game and possibly how to turn the tables on her former masters but has the problem of knowing no other life besides being a criminal (and her few friends are also thieves).

Andy Peloquin does a great job establishing Illana's character and how things are making a previously optimistic child into a hardened woman. Illana rolls with the punches and becomes an exceptional thief that would make Hans Gruber proud but he doesn't avoid showing her flaws. Illana's bitterness, anger, and arrogance get her into a lot of trouble. While she does some unlikable things, she never loses the reader's sympathy and you want her to achieve her impossible dream of getting free of the Night Guild. She's also a rare bi heroine in fantasy, though her romances tend to be tragic.

Overall, this is a fantastic trilogy of books and it's best to buy the collection rather than a single individual book. The narrator does a fantastic job as well.

Great Epic Series worth the time

I received this box set as a courtesy to become familiar with the author, Andy Peloquin. It is an amazing, powerful story of a remarkable woman who eventually becomes the queen of the Night Guild. The character building is well done and easy to get caught up emotionally with the Night Guild characters. Stories are dark with beloved characters dying cruel deaths at the drop of the hat. I found the ending to be what I was waiting for throughout the book. I recommend this box set series and have purchase Book 3.5 to continue what happens to the Night Guild with Illana leading the way.

Amazing story-narration needed quality control

This is a story that makes you feel immersed in the world and I found myself caring about the characters or hating them. The story is awesome. My issue is with the narrator and the recording quality. I don’t know what happened but from chapter to chapter the sound changes from what we would expect to sounding as though she’s recording in an empty bathroom. Her voice is way too crisp and clipped at times; almost painfully to the ears. At other times it’s as though a computer is reading with the way she pauses between words or sentences. It’s the most bizarre recording I’ve come across. This speaks for the writing though because not once did I consider not listening. The story is so good I was always distracted after a while. The emotional effort put into the reading was not quite right. She’s breathy, shouting, and enunciating all at the same time. When she doesn’t do these things I like her accent and voice but it’s the unevenness and bizarre way she chooses to use different voices that just aren’t very smooth. The shouting into the microphone makes me think it was done too quickly or on the cheap. The volume also randomly changes within the recording too. Sigh. I wish this could get a do over. I wonder if the single books are any different than this omnibus edition?

One Hell of a Ride

Survival as a child, rise as a thief, vengeance at betrayal and loss
These three books provide almost 40 hours of entertainment. Written by Andy Peloquin, and narrated by Rebecca McKernan, this box set tells the story of a little girl sold into bondage because of her father’s debits. Then, it moves beyond far beyond just another orphan’s story. Growing up from its grimdark roots, it’s at turns close to Oliver Twist, then Mission Impossible, finally building up to a tale of great personal sacrifice, hard choices and well laid out twists, and surprise reveals.

Yes, it certainly fits the billing as a Grimdark Fantasy Thief Adventure, but it doesn’t dwell in nihilism and provides for well-earned moments of hope, and deliverance, but those always at a cost.

The characters Rebecca acts out become recognizable over the hours, to the point I didn’t need to be told who said what.

I’ll miss Iliana and her folks, the story of an undaunted woman in a man’s world. Full of adventures, thrills and sacrifice, I’m bit bummed it’s over now.

But, it’s a damned fine way to spend a work-week’s worth of time. You’ll get paid in adventure and thrills.
