Publisher's Summary

Countless charities and awareness campaigns work tirelessly to show people that mental health problems are common and serious issues. But when it comes to mental health matters, one question that's rarely asked is...why?

Why are conditions like depression and anxiety so common?

Why is our mental health so vulnerable to the stresses and events of modern life?

Why do so many mental health problems have pronounced physical symptoms?

Why, if mental health problems are so commonplace, does anyone need to be made 'aware' of them in the first place?

And why is there still so much confusion and stigma about mental health matters?

Drawing from nearly 20 years working in the areas of neuroscience, psychology and psychiatry, international best-selling author Dr Dean Burnett (The Idiot Brain, The Happy Brain) hopes to answer these questions and more in his new audiobook Psycho-Logical (exclusive to Audible). Combining in-depth research with genuine testimonials from those who deal with their own issues on a daily basis, Psycho-Logical aims to uncover just what we think is going on with our brains when serious mental health problems occur, how and why the available therapies work (when they do), and just how flexible and uncertain much of the scientific understanding of mental health is.

Expertly narrated and written in an engaging and straightforward style, Psycho-Logical is must for anyone who's ever dealt with mental health issues of their own, knows someone who has or is interested in the ever-more-important subject matter.

Please note: this audiobook contains adult language.

Informative

Psych-logical gives an overview about me tall disorders and the various possible treatment options. I have listened to it on Audible. The narrative was very nice by a warm voice, men. I would include this one to reread or relisten books as it has basic but essential information about me tall disorders and available treatments teaches the percentage of mental illnesses in the UK and basically what are the option in this particular country.

Swearing appalling use of F and W words

Not sure why the author thought swearing would help this audiobook, I don’t remember a disclaimer, I’m half way though now and struggling to keep focus, just waiting for another swearing outburst

Too much political nonsense

This book has a lot of problems. The author unironically uses the term 'toxic masculinnity' and in the first chapter there were attacks on Donald Trump. I purchased this to learn more about the working of the brain, not to hear the author's personal opinions.

A must read, for everyone!

This is another fantastic book by Dean Burnett, and probably his best one to date. His first two books have set the bar extremely high.

Dean Burnett's style of dry humour and absolutely spot on analogies helps to put complex issues across in a way that a lay person can understand. These analogies help to convey to the reader just how difficult it is to understand the complexity of mental health issues. This is no doubt helped by the fact that Dean Burnett is also a stand up comedian.

He starts the book in a very candid way and explains exactly what his personal expertise is and how he is approaching the subject. Dean Burnett has this incredible ability to distil complex issues into some sort of semblance that makes sense. If this was available in paper format I would be sending a copy to many of my family and friends for Christmas.

However, it is unlikely to make the same impact in paper format. The superb narration by Matt Addis, who is one of my favourite narrators, combined with various known personalities narrating their own mental health challenges makes this audio book a very compelling listen.

If you're not convinced within the first 30 minutes of listening, that this is one of the most relevant non-fiction audio books tackling the current issues of the day, I would be extremely surprised!!

Interesting and informative

I learned a lot, found the explanations of complex topics easy to follow, and think I will look at mental health issues differently as a result of this book

Well written

A really well explained book despite the complex subject matter. The swearing is not that intrusive and as it is by people describing their conditions and feelings I think it is appropriate, one can't edit out peoples true expressions without destroying the message. I only comment on this because some reviewers use this as a negative to what is a good book.

another average book

maybe good for someone who doesn't have any knowledge on the topic but I found it very boring. also, it offers only one point of view ignoring many many other aspects of mental health.

Interesting but very beginner level

Another reviewer wrote that the book was "too political" because it "unironically uses the term 'toxic masculinity'", and that it attacks Donald Trump. This of course made me click the buy-button so hard I nearly broke the screen. I don't know what I expected from that, but I was disappointed. This book is not political at all.

Anyway, kidding aside. I find it difficult to review this book. It's a good and informative book, and you can learn a lot from it. However, it's very basic. And sometimes rather banal. I actually found it difficult because I tend to zone out when things get too simple, and when I feel like things are explained like to a child, so I missed much. But, for someone who's new to the subject, it's probably a very good book to begin with.

The part about treating arachnophobia was bad, though. It mentioned spiders so many times I tore my headphones off and started to get a panic attack. I think I might suffer from arachnophobia. This is what trigger warnings are for! (Kidding. At least a little bit. But seriously, skip that minute if you, like me, have arachnophobia.)

The best psychology book I've ever read!

This book is superb, from the content to the writing, to the audio delivery.

Deep enough to be interesting to someone like me who has a fairly extensive background, but easy enough for someone with no background to enjoy while learning.

He mentions more up to date, yet still somewhat non accepted treatments like Ketamine, he does not propose or pretend that he knows everything on the subject, which is very refreshing.

I've been with audible for a decade now, and this is certainly in my top 5 books that I have listened to.

Great work.

Like a story.

This book explains so much about Mental Illness. Easy to understand and opens anyone’s eyes to what mental illness us and isn’t. Anyone embarking on any kind of coaching, counselling or just want to understand their own or a close persons mental state should definetly listen to or read this.
