A great book, and a great performance of it!

Aside from the music/sound pieces which distracted from a masterful performance, this was a great audiobook. Wish Hootkins could've done more of them.

Dang, nice work!

There’s a reason this is a classic. Quick, sharp story, twist ending, all that. You do have to do your best to look past a whole lot of old school misogyny and good deal of transphobia, which could be tough for some. If you can set that aside enough to enjoy it, it’s a great, if flawed, thriller. The performance is excellent. Worth a read for sure.

Even if you’ve seen the iconic movie adaptation, listening to Robert Bloch’s original 1959 novel is a completely different beast. Book-Norman is older, more isolated, heavily reliant on liquor, and deeply unhinged making his internal monologue genuinely uncomfortable to step inside. It’s gritty, fast-paced, and built on a suffocating sense of dread that proves why this story laid the foundation for modern psychological horror.

The Narration:
Experiencing this on audio elevates the creep factor tenfold. Hearing the tense, eerie back-and-forth between Norman and "Mother" voiced out loud will give you absolute chills. The performance captures the quiet paranoia effortlessly, keeping the tension razor-sharp from the moment Mary Crane pulls into the quiet Bates Motel.
