Very creative

I haven’t read the Ancillary series yet, so had few expectations. I thought the novel was very creative, with interesting characters and a plot that drew me in. The narrator was very good at creating characterization through voice and dialect. She even managed to create “otherness” through her use of those tools. My only complaint was that some of her dialects were so heavy that they were difficult for this old (and somewhat deaf) ear to understand. Replaying a section usually worked. Overall, a very enjoyable experience. Now I want to read the Ancillary series!

Not the strongest but still a good time

I've been going through re-listening to all of the books that take place in the Radch universe.

If you read the Ancillary books and want more this is both a reasonable entry and utterly skippable depending on how you look at it. it's the weakest of the bunch IMO but still worth your time.

Book wise, this one works for me the least. Which isn't to say it's bad at all. Ingray's coming of age story is a good arc and Leckie manages to still sneak in plenty of commentary on the blindspots that come with being in a privileged caste. And that's one of my favorite things about these books.

But there are a couple of places where I wish things would have been a bigger moment -if only to emphasize their importance. The attack on the station being a standout example of this. I didn't feel like I had enough context to really appreciate the danger everyone was in.

Audio wise, the narrator does an amazing job in every one of these.

Excellent voice acting and great standalone novel

This is an awesome story and a great first entry into Ann Leckie's books, if anyone is intimidated by their Ancillary Trilogy. Set in the same universe, this book does a great job bringing the galaxy together without feeling like it retreads old ground.

Adjoa Andoh makes an amazing voice presence and breathes life into a world that is familiar and not. I was a little worried I'd struggle with their transition into a different character but their voice work doesn't allow for much confusion, with what feels like a full cast of characters all together.

Great book, great performance

I really enjoyed the Ancillary series, but this book was actually better even though being much smaller in scope. Also, the performance of Adjoa Andoh was absolutely excellent. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys sci fi.

A departure from the ancillary novels

At first I was a bit disappointed because ancillary justice was not a main character in this novel. Neither were the sentient ships main characters. This is a novel which concerns other worlds in the universe where ancillary justice lives. The novel is actually quite interesting and I enjoyed it. The characters basically are one of privilege and one not so privileged. Also there is a great mystery involved in the story; I love good mysteries and I find that they tend to flesh out characters well. I recommend this book.

Good story but highly stylized presentation

Liked it but found it difficult to follow at times. A slight sense that this was somewhat over rated. Count me not a big fan.

Great, but different than the preceding books

I don’t see this as an action book, but more of an aside with cultural intrigue, building up great character back stories for future books. It is odd tho how the Presger mannerisms are represented very different in this book compared to the others.

The narrator is one of my top 10 favs.

great narration

felt like the story plodded along. narrator kept me going. I didn't read the Ancillary series, so I dont know how important that is to the story, or if/where it fits in.
