Publisher's Summary

Olympic medalist fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People, tells a story of the tremendous obstacles, racism, and pressures she has overcome as the first Muslim-American woman to compete in hijab in a sport dominated by privileged white athletes.

This is a tumultuous, unforgettable tale of perseverance and faith. Raised in a working-class community in New Jersey with five siblings, Ibtihaj sought out sports as a means to fund college and fencing was one of the only sports in which she could participate fully clothed. She was fast, hardworking, and devoted to her faith. But in a sport most popular with privileged whites, Ibtihaj remembers often being out of place. Rivals and teammates often pointed out her differences, one even telling her to "take that tablecloth off your head." Ibithaj knew that was a sign of what was to come.

Her path to Olympic greatness has been marked with painful moments and near-debilitating obstacles - from the financial hardship her family endured in support of her to the ongoing bigotry she rose above with passion and grace, bigotry which emerged not just from competitors but also from coaches and teammates who continuously told her she'd never get far in the sport, even after she qualified for the Olympics.

Ibtihaj Muhammad's life is one of overcoming adversity as a woman competing in a sport known for its lack of diversity for a country that views her religion with suspicion and harbors a history of oppressing her race. Her inspiring journey from a young outsider to a national hero is a beautiful, uniquely American tale of hard work, determination, and self-reliance.

Editorial Review

En garde! Check your biases

On its surface, Proud is all about what makes its author different from her peers: her skin color, her gender, her religion, and her choice of sport were all convention-defying for an aspiring Olympian from Northern New Jersey (she eventually became the first to compete in hijab). But listening to Ibtihaj Muhammad’s memoir, the most striking thing is how much her story shares with the upbringing of so many Americans. She was raised by parents who wanted a better life for her than they had, who wanted to instill in her the ethics of hard work, resilience, and good education—much as I was, and likely you were, too. I was drawn to Muhammad’s story initially because I live in the sister town to where she was raised, but what I got from it was a check on my biases, inspiration about what makes a good parent, and a reminder that we all have more in common than we might imagine. —Courtney R., Audible Editor

Powerful story

I am very glad to be able to have an insight into Ibtihaj’s personal story in fencing. As a sabre fencer and fencing coach myself, I want to be able to support all of my students however they come into the salle and I feel this gave me a way to better understand her perspective.

I am also 100% in love with her hijab under her mask. Even though I am not Muslim, I have had waist length hair for my 20 years of fencing and am floored that it took me so long to realize that it was perfectly possible for me to wear something under my mask to not have to rip out my hair on that velcro! (20 years!!!) Going forward, I am going of find a similar head and hair covering for myself simply because of the utter practicality of the garment. At the same time I hope that it can help normalize the idea of head coverings, ANY head coverings, for my students in the future by wearing it.

Thank you for all you do for fashion and fencing, Ibtihaj! 🤺

Productivity- Inspiration- Courage- Grace

Ms. Muhammad’s book is not just an asset to those who share her faith, gender, or race in striving throughout life’s obstacles. It’s also for anyone who has been bullied as an adult or child to know that success is not just in your accomplishments but in how you rise above insurmountable odds to achieve your goals.

Wonderful lessons and story.

I love the storied life of Ibtihaj Muhammad. She is a remarkable young woman. I also appreciate when an author reads their own work, but not all authors are dynamic aloud readers.

Powerful Story

I am truly inspired by Ibtihaj’s story. America couldn’t have had a better representative at the 2016 Olympic Games. She gives me hope that my daughters will grow up in a more inclusive America.

What a wonderful example of determination, strength, and character! I really appreciate her challenge to all of us to not judge based on skin color or religious affiliation, but to realize we are all the same.
