Publisher's Summary

Growing up in New Jersey as the only African American Muslim at school, Ibtihaj Muhammad always had to find her own way. When she discovered fencing, a sport traditionally reserved for the wealthy, she had to defy expectations and make a place for herself in a sport she grew to love.

From winning state championships to three-time All-America selections at Duke University, Ibtihaj was poised for success, but the fencing community wasn't ready to welcome her with open arms just yet. As the only woman of color and the only religious minority on Team USA's saber fencing squad, Ibtihaj had to chart her own path to success and Olympic glory.

Proud is a moving coming-of-age story from one of the nation's most influential athletes and illustrates how she rose above it all.

Editorial Review

En garde! Check your biases

On its surface, Proud is all about what makes its author different from her peers: her skin color, her gender, her religion, and her choice of sport were all convention-defying for an aspiring Olympian from Northern New Jersey (she eventually became the first to compete in hijab). But listening to Ibtihaj Muhammad’s memoir, the most striking thing is how much her story shares with the upbringing of so many Americans. She was raised by parents who wanted a better life for her than they had, who wanted to instill in her the ethics of hard work, resilience, and good education—much as I was, and likely you were, too. I was drawn to Muhammad’s story initially because I live in the sister town to where she was raised, but what I got from it was a check on my biases, inspiration about what makes a good parent, and a reminder that we all have more in common than we might imagine. —Courtney R., Audible Editor

Powerful story

I am very glad to be able to have an insight into Ibtihaj’s personal story in fencing. As a sabre fencer and fencing coach myself, I want to be able to support all of my students however they come into the salle and I feel this gave me a way to better understand her perspective.

I am also 100% in love with her hijab under her mask. Even though I am not Muslim, I have had waist length hair for my 20 years of fencing and am floored that it took me so long to realize that it was perfectly possible for me to wear something under my mask to not have to rip out my hair on that velcro! (20 years!!!) Going forward, I am going of find a similar head and hair covering for myself simply because of the utter practicality of the garment. At the same time I hope that it can help normalize the idea of head coverings, ANY head coverings, for my students in the future by wearing it.

Thank you for all you do for fashion and fencing, Ibtihaj! 🤺

Productivity- Inspiration- Courage- Grace

Ms. Muhammad’s book is not just an asset to those who share her faith, gender, or race in striving throughout life’s obstacles. It’s also for anyone who has been bullied as an adult or child to know that success is not just in your accomplishments but in how you rise above insurmountable odds to achieve your goals.

What an amazing fighter

I never imagined that Ibtihaj had it this tough as a woman and a black in such a sport that looked so elegant to the outsider. Add the hijab on top of it all and you have the story of a young fighter who never gave up. Also, we all need to talk about parents who raise hate filled kids.

Enlightening story! Great insight.

I loved the purpose and message (as it needs to be told) of the book but it was very drawn out. The last third is what grabbed me!

Wonderful lessons and story.

I love the storied life of Ibtihaj Muhammad. She is a remarkable young woman. I also appreciate when an author reads their own work, but not all authors are dynamic aloud readers.

Inspiring

I liked the story, very inspiring and a good lesson of perseverance. What I didn’t like was the voice, very flat, I couldn’t listen for long periods because I fell asleep. Lack of emotions.

Interesting story but lackluster narration

Her personal story is fascinating and it is interesting and at moments depressing to hear about the inner world of fencing. Her narration is so low energy and not engaging that it takes away from the excitement and inspiration of the story.

Beautiful story

Loved Ibtihaj inspirational story! Thank you for sharing your journey. I’m sorry about all the mean folk especially your own team, what a bunch of haters. You carried yourself with so much dignity through all the trails and tribulations. You are a great role model and still have so much to accomplish. May Allah continue to guide you.

So inspiring for all BAME and Muslimah

Absolutely amazing book. I can't write a review that would do it justice. She is honest but not pessimistic. She addresses but doesn't fixate. It's a fantastic book. Got to love Ibtihaj.
