Story
Avalon was thriving. The cold sleep colonists from Earth had settled on a verdant, livable world. The fast and cunning predators humans named “grendels” were under control, and the mainland outposts well established. Avalon’s new mainland hydroelectric power station was nearly complete, and when on-line would compensate for the nuclear power systems lost in the Grendel Wars. Humans would have power, and with power came the ability to make all the necessities for life. They would survive. They would not survive as a spacefaring people.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Story
When Murderbot discovers a dead body on Preservation Station, it knows it is going to have to assist station security to determine who the body is (was), how they were killed (that should be relatively straightforward, at least), and why (because apparently that matters to a lot of people - who knew?). Yes, the unthinkable is about to happen: Murderbot must voluntarily speak to humans! Again!

Story
Particle physics was always an unlikely path to the stars, but with the discovery that space could be compressed, the entire galaxy had come within reach. The technology was astonishing, yet nothing compared to what humans encountered 4,000 light-years from home. Now, with an invitation from a mysterious gatekeeper, the people of Earth must decide if they're ready to participate in the galactic conversation.

Story
A dying man stumbles into a police station and collapses. In his fist is a mysterious coin with strange markings. He tells the police he's from the future, and when they uncover the coin's hidden message, they're inclined to believe him. Daniel Rice never asked for fame, but his key role in Earth's first contact with an alien civilization thrust him into a social arena where any crackpot might take aim. When the FBI arrives at his door and predictions of the future start coming true, Daniel is dragged into a mission to save the world from nuclear holocaust.

Story
It has a dark past - one in which a number of humans were killed. A past that caused it to christen itself "Murderbot." But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don't want to know what the "A" stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue.

Publisher's Summary
What if First Contact doesn't come the way we expect it-or with the sort of aliens we expect? When every side has secrets within secrets to keep, how is anyone supposed to know the truth - or live to tell about it? Is what the Prospector probe reported the greatest discovery of all time... or the biggest hoax?
Bob Hanson, the chief scientist of a major aerospace corporation, has made an incredible discovery. Video images from the space probe he created reveal a wrecked alien spacecraft adrift in the Asteroid Belt. The military enthusiastically embraces an investigation of the extraterrestrials, remarkably indifferent to the inconsistencies that begin to emerge in the data. It's almost as though someone doesn't want the gaps in the story to be exposed....
Undeterred, Hanson keeps digging - and finds much more than he had ever bargained for. As the mystery deepens, only one thing remains certain: His unknown opponents play for keeps.

Worth listening too
Would you consider the audio edition of Probe to be better than the print version?
Yes. I would like to read the book
What was one of the most memorable moments of Probe?
The way the end was, had to listen to entire book to see the whole plot/story
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, most books take me 3-4 days to listen too
Any additional comments?
Have a couple people that narrate, have a man speaking for the men, women speaking for women. It does not seem real sometimes, loose the concentration of the story when a man is pretending to try to sound like a women

A thematic bait and switch
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Likely more for the techno mystery conspiracy types, than for the lovers of hardfirst contact stories.
Has Probe turned you off from other books in this genre?
no
What three words best describe Johnny Heller’s voice?
adequate, clear, crisp
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
disappointment
Any additional comments?
The book is a bit dated as a techno thriller (no email and vcr vs dvr etc). It had a good start as a "first contact" story, but then devolved into a conspiracy drama...
