Publisher's summary

A gripping novel based on the astonishing true story of a boy who survived 10 concentration camps. Based on the true story by Ruth and Jack Gruener.

Ten concentration camps. Ten different places where you are starved, tortured, and worked mercilessly. It's something no one could imagine surviving. But it is what Yanek Gruener has to face. As a Jewish boy in 1930s Poland, Yanek is at the mercy of the Nazis, who have taken over. Everything he has and everyone he loves have been snatched brutally from him. And then Yanek himself is taken prisoner - his arm tattooed with the words PRISONER B-3087. He is forced from one nightmarish concentration camp to another as World War II rages all around him. He encounters evil he could have never imagined but also sees surprising glimpses of hope amid the horror. He just barely escapes death only to confront it again seconds later. Can Yanek make it through the terror without losing his hope, his will - and, most of all, his sense of who he really is inside?

Memories passed down through storytelling have been a vital part of culture since the dawn of civilization, and we've all had moments of pained reminiscence: Where were you on that day? There are few accounts more powerful than audio recollections of the lived histories of 9/11—their words, their voices, their stories all ensure we will never forget, that the passage of time will never erode the memory of those loved, lost, and left behind.

Dr. Halbert

A great read. Students need to know on their level what happened during that time. African Americans are not the only ones who have suffered. I couldn't wait till the end.

AMAZING!!!!!!!!

It was a very descriptive book and made me feel like I was Yanek and I could feel all of the feelings that the characters felt like when they said that they had been working to death and had been starved I felt hungry and tired and when they said that they couldn't go to the bathroom in the cattle cars I had to go to the bathroom when I had just gone to the bathroom and did not drink any water or liquid. Anyways this was a great book and was so amazing.

Memorable story, well writtten

Both my teenage son and I were hooked on this from the beginning. Based on a true story with tragedies the main character and the communities endure -- things that happened during that time that are so important we never forget..

excellent work!

An excellent work. no gratuitous language. very straightforward and poignant. worthy of any Christian to read and learn of the atrocities of the third reich and what a darwinian worldview will produce when taken to its logical conclusion!

Astonishing!

This book shows the evil of human cruelty and what a person is willing to do to survive. The thoughts of the character demonstrate that even in torture a person can still have self control and compassion.
