Publisher's summary

His journey is meticulously documented through detailed accounts of his time secluded behind the doors of the recording studio as well as his days on tour. With unprecedented access to the musicians, singers, and studio engineers who knew Prince best, including members of the Revolution and the Time, Duane Tudahl weaves an intimate saga of an eccentric genius and the people and events who helped shape the groundbreaking music he created.

From Sunset Sound Studios' daily recording logs and the Warner Bros. vault of information, Tudahl uncovers hidden truths about the origins of songs such as "Purple Rain", "When Doves Cry", and "Raspberry Beret" and also reveals details about Prince's unreleased outtakes. This definitive chronicle of Prince's creative brilliance during 1983 and 1984 provides a new experience of the Purple Rain album as an integral part of Prince's life and the lives of those closest to him.

The best Prince book so far

I’ve read several Prince books and this one is the best. Incredible detail! The story of his rise to his apex is told thru the work he did every single day.

Tour de Force!

Dwayne Tudahl’s Prince manual sets the bar very high! The sheer amount of detail included in this book representative of just two years of an over 30 year career is key and exhaustively beautiful! This is a must read for a Prince fan or musician!

If you think you know Prince, think again.

Being what I thought a Prince fan I looked forward to reading this. Not only did this cover what I had known in great detail, it brought so much more. Not only that but the insight brought by the personal interviews and the authors reasoned conclusions are mind blowing. Even if you are moderately interested in Prince this book will make you feel like a knowing superfan.

I would also strongly recommend buying the Purple Rain Deluxe 2 disc set (2017) and having it on hand or playing in the background.

Thankful

To the author, I wanted to let you know how thankful I am that you put this book together.

Your book stirred up a lot of emotions in me; that’s a good thing. I think the narrator’s name is Ron Butler, he does a nice job as well.

When he was reading about the opening night in Detroit at the Joe Louis arena, I could close my eyes, and just for a moment I feel like I was back in time...

great book and very insightful if you are a fan

this book was fantastic and was meticulously researched to give you a great inside look at the most prolific artist of our time. my only quibble is that it did get tedious during times when it was reading off the dates of Studio sessions and concerts. Not that this was important but it just comes off a little slow and tedious through audiobook probably not so much when you're reading it.
