Publisher's Summary

Introduction and Notes by Dr Ian Littlewood, University of Sussex. Pride and Prejudice, which opens with one of the most famous sentences in English Literature, is an ironic novel of manners. In it the garrulous and empty-headed Mrs Bennet has only one aim - that of finding a good match for each of her five daughters. In this she is mocked by her cynical and indolent husband. With its wit, its social precision and, above all, its irresistible heroine, Pride and Prejudice has proved one of the most enduringly popular novels in the English language.

Jane Austen for beginners

Though very well read by Joanna Lumley it’s not the full version and cuts out much of the conversation which the novel centres around. If you are an avid Austen lover you may find it over simplified and wanting.

Just wonderful

I love P and P and I love Joanna lumley. It was very swift so in some ways this was good as no time to drift off and think of something else but in other ways it was over far too soon.

very much abridged

I love Joanna Lumley's voice, but I didn't realise this was an abridged retelling. Many of my favourite lines were gone, and Mary barely appears.

My absolute favourite

My only disappointment is that this is an abridged version rather than the full text but Joanna Lumley's reading more than makes up for that.
