Publisher's summary

Have you ever left a nerve-racking challenge and immediately wished for a do over? Maybe after a job interview, a performance, or a difficult conversation? The very moments that require us to be genuine and commanding can instead cause us to feel phony and powerless. Too often we approach our lives' biggest hurdles with dread, execute them with anxiety, and leave them with regret.

By accessing our personal power, we can achieve "presence", the state in which we stop worrying about the impression we're making on others and instead adjust the impression we've been making on ourselves. As Harvard professor Amy Cuddy's revolutionary book reveals, we don't need to embark on a grand spiritual quest or complete an inner transformation to harness the power of presence. Instead, we need to nudge ourselves, moment by moment, by tweaking our body language, behavior, and mind-set in our day-to-day lives.

Amy Cuddy has galvanized tens of millions of viewers around the world with her TED talk about "power poses". Now she presents the enthralling science underlying these and many other fascinating body-mind effects, and teaches us how to use simple techniques to liberate ourselves from fear in high-pressure moments, perform at our best, and connect with and empower others to do the same.

Brilliantly researched, impassioned, and accessible, Presence is filled with stories of individuals who learned how to flourish during the stressful moments that once terrified them. Every listener will learn how to approach their biggest challenges with confidence instead of dread, and to leave them with satisfaction instead of regret.

Critic reviews

"With advice that is both practical and profound, Amy Cuddy shows how to summon your true and best self when doing so matters most. Emotions are contagious. If you personify poise and optimism yourself, you enhance the odds that they will respond in kind." (Michael Wheeler, Harvard Business School, author of The Art of Negotiation )
"Amy Cuddy is the high priestess of self-confidence for the self-doubting. In Presence, she uses her warmth, empathy, and laser-sharp intelligence to decode the mysteries of presence under social pressure. A must-read for - well, for everyone." (Susan Cain, co-founder of Quiet Revolution and author of the New York Times best seller Quiet)

Inspired a sermon

Chapter 4 on Trust was profound. It inspired me to share an idea with my friend who is a pastor. The sermon was shared on First Sunday of the new year and it was called "Do you trust God?". The point: the book had many points that fed the creativity within my mind. Thank You Amy Cuddy. Great Read!

Enjoyed it, However

if I had known then what I know now about this book. I would have skipped forward from 2 to chapter 10. the author quotes and requotes again and again studies. She is an academic and that's what she does. But I found it very redundant. I feel the same point could have been made in 30 minutes. knowing what I know now I would not get this audiobook

Great, insightful and possibly life altering

Loved this book and how it showed with facts the impact of her ideas. It all seems like common sense but, like most common sense we miss it. This book details the virtuous cycle of behaviors impacting beliefs and beliefs impacting behavior.

I've been recommending it to everyone especially my kids, both in college and surely surfing a case of I don't belong here

Read it! She's terrific

Fake it until you become it

I know there has been a lot of controversy lately about power poses, but I really enjoyed Presence and plan on incorporating them more into my life. Thank you Amy.

Beyond my expectations!

This book was recommended to me by a close friend and I have recommended it to many of my close friends. I have seen transformations beyond my expectations... No only myself, including others around me. I loved the story, the voice and the transformations I have seen. My daughter had a brain injury from a car accident as well and is an actor. Amy's story was frightening and inspiring! Thank you for writing this book.
