Publisher's summary

Clear, concise, and penetrating, Practical Religion contains a series of writings about the daily duties, dangers, experiences, and privileges of all who profess and call themselves true Christians. Ryle explains that a "practical religion" is not a religion of works, but rather one in which those who are saved can put their faith into practice.

A must read handbook for any Christian

This book is one of the most encouraging and insightful treatments of the Christian life available. It will encourage you, teach you, convict you and lead you to a much more sanctified life when accompanied with the power of the Holy Spirit.

Pastors must read it, unbelievers may be saved by it and it is an excellent tool for training your family at home.

You will not be disappointed if you take this book in piece by piece even over a long period of time. Each section is divided into its own book so don't be concerned about its length.

As I look over the other books I have downloaded I am disappointed knowing they are unlikely to be as helpful as this one.

A Book for the Faithful

After listening to this book I have but one question. With the Bible in one hand and this text in the other, what Christian could ever say that they knew not how to live the Christian life? I could only handle reading one chapter a day for I would spend the rest of the day weeping, wailing, repenting, and praying the God through Jesus would renew my mind, my walk, and my actions. I pray many would read this book and be saved from lukewarm Christianity.

Great Book

This is one of the best books I have bought. I had never read JC Ryle so I bought it because of the reviews. I highly recommend this audio book. He rates up there with all the Puritan writers. He is totally by the Bible. The narrator is fantastic. After listening to this I will now listen to all his other books JC Ryle has on Audible. He is that good for your Christian walk.

Amazing. A must read.

This is one of the best books on the Christian life, salvation, repentance, heaven and hell and everything in between. Everyone professing faith in Christ should take the time to read or listen to this.

Needs a different voice

I think the voice makes the material boring. Would like to hear the book with a different voice

J C Ryle Reinterpreted

Disappointed, not with J C Ryle’s teaching and insight, as I strongly feel that he was more devoted to Jesus Christ, the truth, and the transmission of the Gospel.
My disappointment is that the audible recording is not true to J C Ryle’s printed text, in that a good majority of words were replaced with other words. There is nothing hard to understand in Ryle’s word selection, so I feel that this is totally unnecessary. Also, all of Ryle’s books originally used the KJV, and this audible version obviously uses another new translation.
May seem like a minor thing to some; however, I feel that it is dishonest and does not represent the original author’s intent.

Prophetic

It is hard not to listen to this and think that Ryle is speaking of modern times. I chuckled to think what he means by life moving quickly and needing to slow down. If anything, this book is much needed during this age in which we live. Christians will find this book challenging yet helpful. Those who are curious of the Christian faith may be surprised by the assertions made.

Serious, Sombre and Soul Searching

This book needs to be listened to many times. It cannot be taken lightly. It covers many aspects of Christianity that you may not have thought about and therefore need to seriously consider.

You may or may not agree with everything discussed here, but you cannot dismiss it all either. If you are serious about the practical practice of religion (Christianity), then you need to study this carefully. Possibly in a group or with at least one theologically minded person. (Pastor, Minister, Lay-preacher, Priest)!

If you are struggling with your Christianity, you may definitely need to have someone listen to this with you, so take advantage of the 'share' option.

Either way, you will learn a great deal. This is money well spent. Commit to it - it's lengthy but worth it - and on your second pass, I'm certain that you will have made lifelong, hopefully eternal, decisions.

Enjoy.

Sound Advice

What did you like most about Practical Religion?

Straightforward call to self examination.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Practical Religion?

Discovering that the narrator wasn't following the text but modernizing it, no doubt for reasons of relevance.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Well, it's not a novel so it's not about individual scenes but clarity of delivery, and for this top marks, it's good enough to make me overlook the textual departures. Although substituting some other version for the KJV is distinctly annoying. However, along with Ryle's Holiness this is just excellent for exposing the deceit of the heart.
