Publisher's summary

The original gospel proclamation that the Lord of the nations was a crucified Galilean raised from the dead and that salvation was found in vowing allegiance to Jesus of Nazareth unleashed a shock wave that turned the Roman Empire upside down. Early Christianity was subversive and dangerous - dangerous for Christians, and a threat to the keepers of the old order.

Most of all Christianity was countercultural. But what about contemporary American Christianity? Is it the countercultural way of Jesus or merely a religious endorsement of Americanism? In his provocative audiobook, Postcards From Babylon, Brian Zahnd challenges the listener to see and embrace a daring Jesus-centered Christianity that can again turn the world upside down.

"In a bold and daring articulation, Brian Zahnd has sketched a Theology of the Cross for our time and place in the United States of the 21st century. He does so in a way that deeply resonates with the primal claims of evangelical theology. He sees that the Gospel is inherently and inescapably countercultural because the God of the Gospel is in particular and passionate solidarity with the left behind." (Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary)

Excellent book, bad narrator

The content of this book is excellent! If only the narrator was as good as the book. I found his style distracting and I have listened to over 500 audiobooks, and he is among the bottom 25%.

Poignant, punchy, we’ll-paced

I cannot recommend this book enough. It's theologically sound and has woken me up from my empire aligned slumber.

Brilliant Expose of American Babylonism

This book provided context to so much that is stirring in my life. Zahnd has hit the nail on the head; it is encouraging to read that there are voices of sanity in the USA church scene. The author has done a great job of contextualizes some key concepts of the message of Jesus. His analysis of much of the current American church scene is a beacon of hope. He shows that although challenging, it is possible & practical to follow Jesus in a society obsessed by consumerism, militarism & power. We need some more Postcards from Babylon.

Book of the year for me.

I have never heard of the author before I got this book, but I will read everything he has and will write now. Thank you Brian, sure hope I get an opportunity to meet you on this side of heaven and pick your brain about some other things too. Thank you for keeping a much needed tension we need in the church.

Thanks for Clarifying

Every time I learn more about the long-term brainwashing of White Evangelicals I feel more and more sorry for them. Truth has been hidden from THEM. Blacks knew it was hidden from us, so many of us went searching for the real. To not know you're duped, and furthermore to truly believe the bible supports your imperialism makes for a very sad situation.

Outstanding at so many levels!

Awakens my understanding of the world of empire, mammon and Mars which surrounds us, yet of which we live in oblivion. This changes everything. Thank you BZ!

The most thought provoking book

I don’t know what I expected from this book. But it’s literally changed my entire faith journey. It shook me to my core. Convicted me in so many areas. Convinced me to be a warrior of peace, not empire. It should be mandatory reading for everyone who claims to be a Christian.

A voice in the wilderness

This is my second time going through this book. It’s now October 2022. America continues to be divided. The word “civil war “ is becoming more frequent. Zahnd is a prophet. He loves Christ, the gospel which is the gospel of the kingdom. The American church is indeed in exile. We need to listen and heed the message

A must read! I've enjoyed all of Brian's books!

This book is a must read for American Christian's. Brian has a way of revealing biblical truth in a beautiful way. I love all of his books and look forward to more. He is a breath of fresh air and clarity in an America that is polluted with ugly politics.

Prophetic

A real blessing to hear from Pastor Zahnd as he sees our 21st century Babylon enthralled with Mars and Mammon. A good wake up call for me and hopefully all those who are followers of the way of Jesus and not Caesar!
