Wealthy Aunt Norah has never had much time for her poor relations, the Madison family, so it comes as quite a surprise when she dies and leaves everything, including the grandly named ‘Wintry Hall’ to them.

Little brother Jake can make as much noise as he likes, Rose has plenty of space to dress up, Gilly can have peace and quiet to read, while Daisy can play at being a soldier. It seems like a dream come true. Or is it?

The neighbours are snooty and hostile, and the house has a noisy poltergeist, which seems to have taken a liking to Jake. But the poltergeist isn't the only ghost in their new home, and the deeper the Madisons investigate, the more they find: a lost chimney sweep, strange writing that appears from nowhere, a ghostly skeleton on a bonfire, and, out in the garden, a weeping man - who just turns out to be their great-great-great-grandfather.

And if that wasn't enough, even the neighbours want to get rid of them, sending round the police, the RSPCA and social services, getting into the house and daubing messages on the walls. But the Madisons can't leave because it was a condition of Aunt Norah's will that they should live there for at least twenty years. And meanwhile, the ghostly chimney sweep is begging them to find his body.

When Jake disappears, the haunting takes a dangerous turn. The ghost of evil Squire Allworthy, Wintry Hall's original owner, challenges them to find the boy before it's too late - even if it means taking the house apart brick by brick! Just what is the gruesome secret the house has been hiding all these years?
