Winner of the 2017 Ned Kelly Award

Another thrilling mystery featuring Detective Sean Duffy and his most dangerous investigation yet.

Belfast, 1988. A man is found dead, killed with a bolt from a crossbow in front of his house. This is no hunting accident. But uncovering who is responsible for the murder will take Detective Sean Duffy down his most dangerous road yet, a road that leads to a lonely clearing on a high bog where three masked gunmen will force Duffy to dig his own grave.

Hunted by forces unknown, threatened by Internal Affairs, and with his relationship on the rocks, Duffy will need all his wits to get out of this investigation in one piece.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Gerard Doyle has provided the voice of Adrian McKinty's Sean Duffy since the first audiobook of the series. Returning for Book 6, he's more in tune with Duffy's complexity than ever before.... McKinty's blend of dark drama with perfectly timed humor and intensely plotted action is performed by Doyle as though he's intimately familiar with Duffy's mind, heart, and body. Listeners comprehend the vastness of Duffy's emotion without a caricatured delivery. Doyle delivers another winning narration." ( AudioFile)

Another great installment

So far this series is still holding strong -- this installment is a great book in a terrific series. I'm not a big fan of Sean's girlfriend (and mother of his daughter), but I am a big fan of Sean, so the parts of the book that involve his family life are still pretty good. I like the progression of the characters as they age and change, like real people and not catalogue models who are always the same. That's one of the strengths of Adrian McKinty's novels - characters who are real, with strengths and weaknesses, quirks and foibles, and passions and aversions.

Gerard Doyle, as always, is a perfect match for this series.

One of the best!

Oh my goodness, I could not put this down! The long-awaited sixth Sean Duffy book was well worth that wait. My only disappointment is that I've finished it.

There were so many things to love about this book. The beginning, when Sean is being led at gunpoint to his execution - huffing and puffing - sets the stage. His relationship with Beth is typical Sean. We can see that his past excesses are coming to haunt him when he has to face a police physical. A murder by crossbow! Who would have thought? Sean being sarcastic and disrespectful? Well, that's why we love him.

It took me two runs through this series before I realized DC Lawson is the same Alex from HIDDEN RIVER. Clever that Mr McKinty. Duffy, Lawson, and Sgt McCrabben (I listen to the audiobooks so I'm not sure of the spelling) make a fantastic team.

This book had me laughing, cringing, a little teary-eyed, and fearful. It was fabulous.

I cannot say enough about Gerard Doyle. This collaboration between author and narrator makes this series special. Makes it phenomenal!

McKinty is a genius. I hope he's busily writing the continuing story of Sean Duffy (or Michael Forsythe even.)

I highly recommend this book, this series, and this author!

Fantastic!

the best Sean Duffy yet. I've read tons of detective fiction this series has been my favorite. I strongly recommend this book but better still start at the beginning and listen to them all. Gerard Doyle is among the top narrators in the business. if you are even remotely considering this series stop wasting your time thinking and just start the books already!

McCinty is just a lovely writer.

If you could sum up Police at the Station and They Don’t Look Friendly in three words, what would they be?

McCinty has a way of injecting humor into his stories that is just wonderful. And Gerard Doyle is a treasure - he's one of my favorite actor/narrators.

What did you like best about this story?

I just love Sean Duffy. He is a unique character in this genre.

Which character – as performed by Gerard Doyle – was your favorite?

I adore Crabby, Sean's friend and sidekick.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Gosh, I don't know but I wish they would come to the screen. These books would make a wonderful TV series because the characters are so multi-dimensional.

Fooking Brilliant!

Any additional comments?

This author and this narrator are an amazing match. I feel I know the characters well, to the point I could have a pint with them and discuss the troubles, despite having grown up in Florida. This is the best in the Duffy series and all have been FOOKING BRILLIANT! (will probably come off as a tosser for saying that)

Very Enjoyable

I find these books very interesting. They are not formula driven. I enjoy the fact that they have many twists and turns. I've listened to a few of the Sean Duffy books
and I find them to be very unique and enjoyable. I also like the history aspect of it.

Fast and Enjoyable

Stayed up till 1am to finish it. Made me laugh a few times out loud. The narrator is terrific. I will listen to the other books as soon as possible. Great build up and love the humor and generational humor of the 80s music. Well done and love the poetry sprinkled thru out the story.
