Publisher's Summary

I lived in paradise, and I loved Spencer Pierce.

At 14, my life was perfect. The beach was my playground, and the boy who stole my heart lived just around the corner. But perfect never lasts. In one horrifying moment, I lost it all. My family was destroyed, and the boy I believed in turned his back on me. Paradise became a nightmare.

That was five years ago. Everything changed when we moved from our home by the sea. I've changed, and I don't like who I've become. I miss the smiling, carefree beach girl who disappeared that terrible night. I want to find her again. I want to face the people we ran from so long ago. Most of all, I have to face Spencer. So I can prove that when he broke my heart, he didn't break me.

But when I see him again, Spencer Pierce is no longer the boy from my memories. He's now a man who could devastate me if I let him. He watches me when he thinks I'm not looking. There's regret written on his face when he's near. Each time I see him, my heart aches for what might have been, and I think his does too. How can I convince myself I'm over him when I suspect he never got over me?

Sweet Contemporary Romance With Lots of Drama

This was a sweet slow building romance from childhood friends that were scarred by their past. They went through a lot together and before their friendship could grow into something more, tragedy struck and they were pulled apart by circumstances.

Narration was well done and brought the story to life.

The story drew me in and kept me interested all the way to one of the sweetest conclusions I have heard. The characters were well developed and the romance picks up towards the end with some much waited special moments between Sarah and Spencer. There is quite a bit of drama and heartache but it is worth sticking with it until the end.

Odd US/Boston accent for sure.

Why oh why oh WHY would you use a British accent for American characters set in Boston?????? Also, don't understand what the title has to do with the story. Anyway, sweet romance, but dealing with some heavy stressful issues. Could have edited out most of female character's boyfriend/ex. Ending left romance completed, but a major issue in the couples life was on the way of trying to be resolved. Would have liked to hear how how that part ended. Kind of left me hanging. After writing the review, I downgrade to 3 stars. (Originally Rounded up to 4 stars from an actual 3.5 rating.)

Wonderful story & narration

I was given a free copy to review at my request. I love to read & had never tried an audio book before. This story drew me in from the beginning & I thoroughly enjoyed the narration to the story. She brought the story & characters to life - making you feel like you truly are a part of it. Well written, well narrated, well done.

O K

This narrator was new to me but I enjoyed her style and voice. The story was fine but didn't manage to grab me. Its probably a grand story just not for me. I think I will listen to more by this narrator.

Wonderful

I haven't really figured this book out yet. It's good. I'm enjoying it. I just don't know how to describe it. A young girl has her world turned upside down with the death of her father at that age when she is becoming interested in boys and is trying to help a boy she would like to be more than friends. They are linked together through this, and through the tragedy of her father's death. The remaining family moves away from Sarah's hometown and it's five years later that she returns to face that death. When she gets there she reconnects with Spencer, the boy she had a crush on back then, but thought he didn't like her.  What a wonderful, well-written book. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. The narrator did an excellent job.

loved this love story

I really enjoyed this story, although at first I was confused by the narrator. She had a British accent but the story takes place in the US. Once I got past that, I drove right into the story. Very much worth a read or listen.

I loved this book

I really liked this story. It was very original and genuine. I like it when the Author can make you feel what the Character is feeling. And The narrator has a great voice.

Great read

Any additional comments?

Play of Light by Debra Doxer was a good book. Sarah met Spencer and knew she would love him forever. Everything changed in an instant. Five years later and they meet again but maybe it is what both needed. I loved reading this book.

Great story from a new-to-me author

Would you listen to Play of Light again? Why?

I was given a free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I enjoyed the story very much. The characters drew me in right from the start, and I appreciated that there weren't a lot of contrived conflicts added to Sarah and Spencer's relationship after they finally recognized their feelings for each other. I was actually sorry when the audiobook ended (I hadn't realized how close I was) because I loved knowing the two main characters. However, I did not like the narration. I gave the performance 4 stars because there was nothing technically wrong with it, I just really didn't like it. The narrator's accent is not American, and I was confused when she first mentioned the geographic location not too far into the book, because I had no idea it was taking place in New England (and partly in Michigan). So I felt throughout the book that something was off. I also don't personally enjoy when the narrator reads an attribution such as, "she laughed." and then laughs. But I will definitely seek out other books by Debra Doxer. The words Play of Light refer (I'm pretty sure), to the light on the beach where the two main characters often meet, and the many beautiful images scattered throughout the story through Sara's artistic interpretation helped keep me riveted to the story in spite of my unhappiness with the narration.

Brilliant

Took me awhile to get through this one. The narration was confusing to me, not sure what the purpose of the accent was. That being said the narrator was genius! Performance was outstanding! She was spot on with emotions. This author was a first for me and I look forward to more!
