Publisher's summary

From the author of Feast and Reinheit comes a new chapter in horror....

Planet of the Dead.

News reports speak of mass panic and violence spreading across the globe. Negligent leaders hide behind misinformation. But in an age of paranoia and suspicion, who can say what is true anymore? Struggling to survive against a sweeping epidemic that has engulfed the planet, survivors will have to make hard choices in a world that no longer makes sense.

Live. Die. Or become one of the undead.

Zombie goodness.

It's hard to summarise the plot of this without spoiling something, so all I'll say is it's a zombie story! It has blood, guts, death and mayhem throughout!!! It focuses on different characters, not all will survive, and tells their struggles from the start of the outbreak.

I actually really enjoyed this book! The main thing I enjoyed was the characters and seeing the outbreak take hold from their point of view! It just added some tension and made it feel more real. Usually I hate so many different point of views, but these ones were told in such a way that I had no problem telling who was talking at any given time.

The overall story has whetted my appetite for the series and I'm looking forward to the next one. It's by no means an excellent Zombie book, but it was enjoyable and that's all that matters.

Rick Gregory was easy to listen to and read this well. He had different tones for different characters and it was easy to follow along. My only gripe is that he needs to work on his inflections a bit more to bring the atmosphere to life.

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts

The Zompocalypse has returned to gnaw on you again

Ok, let me get this out here and now. YES, this is a zombie apocalypse book. I know there are now like a thousand of them out there. That doesn't mean that there can't be more. This one justifiably adds to the genre, and one thing that I really love is that is doesn't hold back on the gore. I am a splatterhound, and so this was right up my alley. Lots and lots of gruesome deaths, and a lot of stupid people do stupid things and get killed (just like real life). The blood falls like rain and the bodies drop like sandbags. I really did not want to stop listening.

I think a good reason for that, aside from excellent writing, was the amazing work done by Rick Gregory. The man can tell a story. He played this like he was in the middle of the zombie horde. The fact that he makes each character distinct and unique is impressive enough, but the way he controls the story is just off the charts impressive. He is without a doubt, one of my favorite narrators. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

The Beginning of a Dead Planet

This seemed more to me like a collection of stories existing in the same timeline versus one story. It jumps around between different characters and their respective story lines and never really comes together. Not sure if the survivors will ever join together. With that said this is a series so don't get involved with this one if you aren't willing to listen to more. There isn't an ending to this story so I early await the next one. I enjoy the author's other novels so I have high hopes for this series.
I am a huge fan of Rick Gregory's gritty voice and happen to enjoy most of the stories he reads. This narration really impressed me. I think he did a really good job with his voice and tone in this story and it is clear that he is maturing as a narrator.

Creepy Zombie Story

Thomas S. Flowers has never not delivered weirdness for me when I pick up a story of his. You can always count on him for that and 'Planet of the Dead' is no exception! A somewhat typical zombie tale with that Thomas S. Flowers spin on it, this story is a satisfying listen. It's not the most unique zombie tale I've ever consumed, but it is narrated by Rick Gregory which makes it well worth the listen. If you're a zombie story fanatic, you shouldn't miss this one!

Whoa...

Ok, so, I finished this audiobook a couple of days ago, and took to romance novels to clear my head enough so I could sleep. The violent imagery is so extreme, I was afraid of having nightmares, lol. If this had been a movie, it probably would have garnered at least an NC-17 rating. I started this book around dinner time, and let me just say, pasta was a bad choice. So, that said, having read this author before, I wasn't surprised, but rather impressed with a level of gore I've only seen once before in a zombie novel. I am glad this is a series, and I look forward to listening to the rest. As a side note, I'm once again impressed with this narrator's ability to read this stuff aloud without audibly flinching. It's a testament to his fortitude. Well done!

What an ending

Loved how the story was divided by characters. Great getting to know them and their background. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Zombie plague strikes again!

Your classic tale of zombie plague destroying the world. A few survivors struggle to eek out a living in the ruins of society. A small band makes an office building their home with the hope to build a safe haven for the remains of humanity in it. They slowly add to their numbers yet face a growing concern not just in the number of zombies but also in the quality of zombies. It appears a super strain is emerging. Also the cure may be in their midst. Enjoy! I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

A very solid Zombie Apocalypse book

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was an interesting zombie apocalypse book. It took the World War Z approach of telling the individual tales of multiple people all experiencing the same ZA. It is very gory with lots of graphic detail. That doesn't bother me, but if that gets to you, you don't want to listen to this book. Be warned. :) That being said, I rather enjoyed this book and thought it was well narrated. I will definitely look for more if this becomes a series.

A Mayhem-Filled Zombie Story

A zombie story through and through with a lot of other elements that lots of people would enjoy.  You've got mayhem throughout and all of the things that come with mayhem.

Planet of the Dead was one of those stories that I didn't know I was going to enjoy.  Sure, I love zombie books as much as the next guy - but I just didn't know going into it.  Well, I loved it and had a blast flying through this book.

Flowers way of skipping from person to person explaining the story from their viewpoints really made this so easy to read.  Even if you didn't like a person or a point of view - you knew it was going to move on to another person soon after.

Bouncing from person to person can be hard to follow but I thought that Gregory did a great job tying everything together with good narration.  Every one and a while I find him to be a little too... flat in his narration (no ups or downs depending on the pace of the story for example) but nothing that would turn me away from another book narrated by him.  It's hard to add that to the story without over-acting the part.

Overall, an enjoyable zombie book by a great author.  Planet of the Dead - what's not to love?

Also, let's take a second to enjoy the cover art on this.  Well done and thought out - this one definitely had my attention before I knew anything about it. I requested a copy of this book from the narrator which has not affected my review in any way.
