Publisher's summary

From the best-selling author of My Sister's Keeper comes the riveting story of a murder that shatters the picturesque calm of Amish country - and tests the heart and soul of the lawyer defending the woman at the center of the storm.

The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: Circumstantial evidence suggests that 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide - and for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own. Delving deep inside the world of those who live "plain", Ellie must find a way to reach Katie on her terms. And as she unravels a tangled murder case, Ellie also looks deep within - to confront her own fears and desires when a man from her past reenters her life.

Plot twist!!!!!

Loved it for the most part. I couldn't get past the voice for the judge. I wanted to hear what she had to say ,I would cringe the entire time. 😬

Good story,needs better narrators

Why do all the narrators have to overact and act angry or Morose at inappropriate times. Jodi is a fabulous storyteller. They don’t do her work justice.

Once you get past Katie the book is alright.

Ughh Katie. I’ve read a lot of books with Amish characters specifically females. Yes they can be shy and naïve about their outside world yet they retain a strength of their own. Katie’s portrayal is in short annoying. I loved Ellie and all of the other characters involved in the story. The plot and story lions are superb. The narration was great. It’s just Katie. Everything about her personality her reasoning somehow bothered me. I kept rolling my eyes. Sadly this made my experience with the book less enjoyable

Captivating

This book had me hooked from the first paragraph. I have listened to a lot of Amish related books but this one was realistic with modern times. It has a few curse words in it not spoken from the Amish but the Englishers that relates to the storyline. Exceptional book in my opinion and I will be reading more from this Author.

Good story with terrible narrators

I love Jodi Picoult’s work. I had seen the movie based on this book a while back and since the book is always better than the movie and you get soooo much more detail, I wanted to give it a listen. The narrators are absolutely horrendous. The make the characters either sound stupid or pompous and arrogant. The judges voice is the worst. It was hard to get through the whole book because of the narrators, but I was invested in the story and wanted to know what happened. Good insight into the Amish culture.

Emotional. Meaningful. Thought provoking

The story canters along at a steady pace. A lovely book. Opens your mind to other cultures and scenarios. The end is surprising
