Publisher's summary

Back in college, Jane Lewis would have given anything to be like homecoming queen Connie Bryan. Instead she was just Plain Jane - overweight, frumpy, and painfully shy. That was then. Today, a lovely and confident Dr. Jane Lewis has a thriving psychotherapy practice, her own radio talk show, a beautiful old Louisiana mansion, and her affectionate, nutty dog, Olive, to keep her company. The only thing missing is someone to share her life.

Jane has never forgotten Michael Sorenson, the boy she'd admired from afar in college. Now he's inspiring her to hope for a future together. She's also never forgotten the brutal, unsolved attack that ended Connie Bryan's life - and haunts Jane still. Suddenly the present collides with the past as she finds clues into the identities of Connie's attackers - clues that send her into a world of risk and excitement, challenging her to become a truly extraordinary woman...if she dares.

This gave me the courage…

This book gave me the courage to write my own book because I can’t possibly write anything as dumb as this meandering ghost filled disaster of a story. Before I realized what year it was written, I wondered if it was possibly written by an early version of Chat GPT given a prompt of writing a novel with a “vegetarian dog”, “police role play”, “protagonist that doesn’t make any sense”, and “no conceivable plot”. Conversations jumped around so much I thought my audio was skipping. The side characters and b, c, and d plots were so outlandish that I didn’t question whether the (ghost) writer did any research, I knew they hadn’t and were gleeful about their lack of care. The only mystery is how any of this got past an editor.

Horrible characters and hokey dialogue

The only decent person in this book dies at the beginning. The “heroine” sits on evidence of two rapes. The “hero” is a jerk. (Fern, a guy showing up in the pre-dawn hours for a lunch date isn’t romantic. It’s a red flag.) Oh, and it’s got a really stupid ghost story thrown into this “romantic mystery” - something the Audible blurb writer failed to mention. You know what you did, Audible employee. You. Know. What. You. Did. Narration was schmaltzy but then so was the writing so maybe the narrator just didn’t have anything to work with.

Ok until half way thru...BTW not spooky at all

I thought it had potential. Part of the story was good until the FMC completely turned into a ridiculous child. I didn't get it.On the turn of a dime, the woman becomes obnoxious. She states that she doesn’t allow adults to act like children, then boom, she flipped out and reacts into petulant kid. Then, she throws tantrums after tantrums, and her poor behavior is enabled by her once wise God parents. The plan to railroad the men to confess was laughable...never would happen. She would have been dead. AND THEN the story never explains what happened to those guys! UGH dropped storyline is worse than a cliffhanger!

As for her romantic interests, I honestly dont think a man would put up with her. Her "test" is BS they are totally unprofessional. In a word, the FMC is a fing *itch!

The premise of the rape is totally off base... it didn't make sense why/ how the college students would gang rape someone for a friend? Oh, co.eon! It sounds like the author has a grug against fraternity brothers. Also, the dog training was completely incorrect. Basically, the book is a silly mess.

I don't think I can finish

I still have 7 hours left and I have been trying to power through. The story is soooo meh. The romance is not just lukewarm - it's creepy. Instead of chemistry, I'm waiting for him to rob her or commit a home invasion and tie her up. The main protagonist is a psychiatrist who has zero insight, and pathetic lack of self determination. Poor her, boo hoo. She hates herself because of her mean mother and witnessing someone else's trauma; her own lack of action. Yet, as pathetic as the character comes across - the reader is meant to see her as the hero. She has no professional or personal boundaries but she is a psychiatrist?? I just can't see getting to the end of this and being happy for the hours spent on this. If this was a paperback, I would flip through a few pages of each chapter just to get closure.

Difficult to finish

Primary character acts irrationally on numerous occasions. Foolish moves, ghosts, and dogs that think and act like humans was too much.

This book has everything!

This book has everything you could have in a book. Love, hate, ghosts, comedy, little bit of violence. I liked this book. Fern Michaels does a great job with this book. Jane has a hateful mother, but she finds wonderful God parents to more than even the score. Well worth the credit. The narrator, Teri Schnaubelt, gets it just right with her performance of these characters.

Lack Luster

Slow start, focused on unimportant details, hard to believe, and I can’t believe I was able to finish. Whew. Glad that’s

A Good story

There was a lot of adventure and the settling of past trauma. The narration was very good and made the story very compelling.

Plain Jane

This was a truly wonderful book. Reminds me so much at points of my mother and how she treated my sister and I. So many different references that I can identify with, especially the love of the dogs, responsibility, patience, the music (Marine Corps hymn); I was a Woman Marine for 20 years. That hymn brings tears to my eyes to this day, a very honorable hymn. I even asked my sister to read the book, so many parts hit home. Semper Fi Ms. Fern
