Publisher's summary

Beaten, bruised, and shot, Caleb Ledger dives off a burning yacht, desperately trying to cling to life.

It doesn’t work.

Instead of a briny death, Caleb finds himself reborn in the world of Avalon. A place of magic, levels, and quests filled with adventure involving mystery, rescues, dragons, and a revenge-obsessed warlock.

After a rocky arrival, Caleb hunts for a bouyant way to adapt to his new life. With no way to make an honest living upon the sea, there’s an obvious answer: the path of the privateer, the byway of the buccaneer, the skull and crossbones. Armed with a cutlass, pistol, and weather magic, Caleb stands no chance unless he figures out how to level up in a hurry!

Join Caleb's adventure today!

Check This One Out

Right up front before you read any further just know that I recommend this book to anybody thinking about giving it a shot. A little context for my review. I tend to take it easy on the first and last book of any series as not every series makes it to “The End” and the first of anything can be a shaky endeavor. I also try to make clear the distinction between the quality of the writing/performance of the author/narrator and my personal tastes should they differ. The story opens up in chaos. The main character appears to be on a yacht that is in the process of being boarded. No idea whose yacht it is and the attackers might be pirates. Our main character comes across a dead DEA agent with the top of her head blown off. He hears and sees a bikini clad lady in the water trying to get to safety. Our main character grabs a hook to fish her out. She reacts in fright when she sees who's trying to help her. Then she relents and lets him help her out. She doesn't speak English but there are others yelling and then shots impact near him before tearing through him. Into the water he goes and next he finds himself the topic of two gods. They're unsure of his kind but give him the chance at reincarnation. He wakes up coming out of the water naked and unsure of exactly what's going on. The gods have taken some of his memories. There is some sort of game like interface, and he starts off trying to complete the first set of missions before being killed. The world appears to be something out of the age of ships complete with flint lock pistols. Awakening again in the water he finds out that he's just lost the first of three lives. Angry and hell bent on getting even he commits his first killing. Now he awakens in a dungeon. It's not all doom and gloom, after all he is some sort of wizard. This is the pace of the first hour of the book and there are still approximately 11 more to go. This is the first book that I have listened to by this author. Checking over on Amazon he appears to have quite a number available. This is also the first time I've come across this narration team, but I was quite taken with their performance. Lastly, I'll just say well done to everybody who had a hand in bringing this story to us, the Audible listeners.

We recommend that you avoid dying

A really fun and casual gamelit story!

The author brings cool new ideas to the table like pirate wizards, unique horn paladin and a barbarian griffin.

World building 4.5/5 very interesting and developed places and characters.

Story idea: 5/5 really enjoyed the pirates and ship battles.

Magic system: 4/5 simple and good, but the exp feels pointless in it

Characters: 4.5/5 fun. Interesting and relatable characters

Narrators: 5/5 for the main narrator, it's like being in the middle of the fight with his sound narrations.

2.5/5 for the second one… it's really hard to tell between her characters.

All in all 4.5 very recommended

thrilling

A great isekai take on the pirate genre. I found it absolutely enjoyable to see how everything plays out for the MC as he tries to navigate and thrive in his new world.

A Different Kind of Fantasy, But Enjoyable.

Our main character meets a tragic end and finds himself to be judged amongst the gods. He's granted new life and finds himself on a cruel island. With little guidance regarding the direction he should go, the MC makes some odd allies and tyrannical enemies, in his escape for freedom and all kinds of discoveries.

There is a heavy emphasis in the word "escape" because that's pretty much the foundation of this book. The series so far has been as enjoyable even if it appears misleading at times. The LitRPG elements are pretty lite, from the experience gained to the quests that are offered. The MC starts off in a ROUGH spot, but after spending some time too...confine himself, and collect his bearings, the story picks up after meeting some unique allies. The setting, plot, and characters are all enjoyable, which is emphasized by the voice actors that do a terrific job (these two narrators are new to me, and I was pleasantly surprised how well they did).

One major gripe to say about the series. When adding a title for every chapter, there is a fine line between small foreshadowing and giving a spoiler. This book crossed that line. It's a waste starting a chapter and knowing EXACTLY what's about to happen in said chapter. It got to the point that the second the next chapter was announced, I would jump forward 30 seconds just so I could be surprised regarding what happens next. Strongly recommend being more vague with chapter titles in future books, or just not having them altogether.

Overall a fun start of a series that's narrated by a good duo. Interested to see where the story goes from here.

Great Book

I loved this book i cant wait till number 2 comes out if you enjoy pirates and magic you are sure to enjoy this. I like the magic system and the way they have the stats and level up. i also enjoy the amount of control the mc has over the sensations that have to do with his spells and level ups.

Love me a good pirate story!

Pirates and magic, what’s not to love. And though I’m NOT a fan of cliffhangers i still enjoyed the story this far.

We need more pirate LitRPG like this story!

This is the first time I have read a book from Michael Angel and he did a great job! I absolutely love the pirate and nautical LitRPG aspects and we need more like this in the genre! The MC and supporting characters are well written, the story and plot move at a great pace, and the story is a fun ride. I look forward to book 2! Audio Version: Theodore Zephyr and Julia Walker do a great job narrating and with each of their respective characters.

A Lot Going on Here

This book is a great listen. I am enjoying the flash backs where he is gaining memories and all the new things he is learning. It is a big change when the main character isnt an over powered one but still learning everything.

Awesome Book

This was an awesome book. It is set in an isekai atmosphere and that's no issue to me. The MC must come to grips with a world, powers, and problems he's never known before. On top of all that, he must decide if this is a fresh start on life or if he should act the same way he did in his former life. Actions have rewards and consequences in this new life.

Fun Story!

Fun adventure on the High Seas. Kinda styled as a young adult or teenager story but with a few adult references. So confusing in a way. If the story were for an adult audience it might have been just a bit more of everything. I enjoyed it as a basic easy peasy now now Princess story. I found it funny in quite a few places. I hope the next book is more tense or fraught with danger that keeps you on the edge. The litrpg aspect is toned down to just some skill progression. All in all I'll check out the next book hoping for more. The good books have been kinda slim lately. I really liked the pirate aspect but unless a pirate hunts down other pirates or basically is going to war, how can they be good? Eventually, they have to attack pesceful targets to survive unless they develop some kind of income from another source. Thank you for the story. I

Fun, witty and engaging

I have received this free copy for an honest review. This is a great experience, it doesn't shy away from some controversial topics which is natural to happen, it is interesting in a way ehich shows some trauma and how this is dealt with and how a human can try to be as good as possible ehile trying to survive. It is also just fun to listen. Narration is clear and easy to understand and ends in one hell of a cliffhanger, really want to know what happens next!

An enjoyable read with a unique execution

I am just about to finish this book and have definitely enjoyed it. there are some really interesting concepts that make this like a gamelit cross litrpg.

With a non standard view on fantasy races this gets really interesting and has a believable MC who may not always be likable but always made sense to me.

Give it a read and let me know what you think.

Blackbeard (the early days)

Good story, liked the use of non human support characters for the MC, flows well and leaves you right on a cliffhanger, needing to know more. The need to repeat at the beginning of each chapter was for me unnecessary, but didn’t detract from the story line.
Narration.. the lack of a pause between chapters was a little off putting and having not heard the male narrator before, took a little time before I gelled. If I could of have given it a 4 and half stars.

A very interesting book 1 with the MC living a life on the sea as a pirate. It's a really different book and very interesting. can't wait to see how the story progresses further
