Critic Reviews

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." ( AudioFile magazine)

🇵🇹 Not really European Portuguese...

Multiple times there are sentences that use "Voce" instead of "Tu" as the second-person singular.
In Portugal, people don't use it. They think it is highly inappropriate to use "Voce" to speak to someone even informally. Be careful. My language teacher in Lisbon told me that last month.
"Voce" is only used in Brazilian Portuguese and it is not ok to speak that way in Portugal.
Please don't only rely on this material to speak real European Portuguese in Portugual !
Otherwise the material helps to grasp the pronunciation and that's why I'm still learning with it.

only a few chapters. insufficient content

A good way to learn but keep in mind you need at least 5 of these to get by. they sell very little in each audio book.

Huge opportunity to replace this book on the market

This is the worst book on this topic possible. You will only learn phrases by rote memorization, no structure or tricks to understand links to English. In all, for the entire book there are only about 5 phrases in total but the speaker spends the entire book repeating the same ones. The only saving grace is that because it’s an audiobook, you can capture the pronunciation correctly.

Great way to learn a language

Any additional comments?

This is my first time using audible for language learning purposes and I am very pleased. I am a visual learner but the pace and repetition made it possible for me to still learn some Portuguese. There were a few times I had to rewind and listen to certain phrases again but I imagine this is normal. It is literally a foreign language. I would highly recommend this program. Each lesson is about 30 min and they recommend you only do one a day. They do a good job recalling words and phrases in the next lesson instead of overwhelming you with new material each time. Its a productive way to use your morning commute time. Give it a try!

It’s fine

This follows the same format as Pimsleur courses but for me the nature of European Portuguese doesn’t lend itself well to pure audio learning because of the phonetic system. I find find that I need written material to follow along.

Confusing

The author believes in an all-aural method of language acquisition. I have trouble with that approach without a teacher or voice recognition, since there’s no way to know if my pronunciation is correct or understandable. Also I don’t know where one word ends and the next begins.

Finally, I want to learn to read and write Portuguese, not just speak it, so the all-aural method does not help there. I learn best using both my eyes and my ears. Better than nothing, I suppose, but I don’t buy the author’s self-serving boasting.

Awesome European Portuguese Audiobook

The audiobook takes listeners on a fantastically constructed educational excursion. The book is interactive, allowing speakers of any level to quickly understand basic conversational elements in real life situations that assist in better memory acquisition.

The content is not too long allowing the listeners to set aside time each day towards mastering the language. All in all a great listen, powerfully delivered with strong content.

Explanation àbout Pimsleur to long.

The learning of the language is fine but the time wasted, about 14 minutes plus, telling you about the Pimsleur method is a waste of time that could have been used to teach.

30 words in the whole book

I believe that the whole book has about 30 words. The lessons are very repetitive and slow. I did not learn much at all.

discriminating...

it implies me being an american man in first place - not leaving a chance to be someone else... Why do you think I try to get European Portuguese (not Brazilian)? I live in Europe; don't speak AMERICAN English; don't have any intention to go to America. It supposed to be for any English speaker and not for Americans only, ain't it? I speak not too bad British English - thought it's not my native.. What's more I'm not a man - why there is no chance to be woman? That feels depressive.
