What You'll Learn

Norwegian Level 2 continues where Norwegian Level 1 leaves off.

In the first 10 lessons, you'll begin using the past tense. Structures become more complex, and informal speech is introduced. Soon you'll take part in conversations about ordering meals, shopping, and local tourist attractions. As you progress, your fluency will increase as your vocabulary expands.

The next 10 lessons will allow you to further combine and build upon known elements and produce longer and more complex sentences. You'll be discussing business and social activities, expressing your interests, and talking about the weather.

In the final 10 lessons, you'll double your vocabulary. You'll be able to ask for assistance in many situations and to ask for directions to various locations. You'll explore sports and leisure activities, manage changing money and banking, and discuss travel plans. By the end of the program, you'll be speaking at a midintermediate level with near-native pronunciation, and you'll be comfortable meeting most social demands and limited job requirements.

Reading lessons are included at the end of lesson 30. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to give you practice reading Norwegian. You'll be reading words, phrases, and short sentences using familiar vocabulary as well as new vocabulary regarding useful topics such as food, travel, shopping, communication, and more. A reading booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

The Norwegian Language

Norwegian is spoken by approximately 5 million people, primarily in Norway, although there are some speakers in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, the UK, Spain, Canada, and the United States. It is closely related to Swedish and Danish. In Norway, no official standard of spoken Norwegian exists, and there are hundreds of spoken dialects. Generally, the dialects are mutually intelligible. In the Pimsleur program, we adhere as closely as possible to the pronunciation of the inhabitants of Oslo, the capital of Norway.

Critic Reviews

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." ( AudioFile)

A good start

This is a great way to improve your Norwegian language skills. That being said, it is SAD that Pimsleur doesn't have anything for Norwegian beyond Level 2 because 60 lessons (levels 1 & 2 = 60) are not sufficient to cover the basics. You may be an advanced beginner by the close of Level 2. You'll learn about visiting, shopping, traveling around town, eating/drinking, playing sports, going to work/scheduling, going on vacation, using your phone, talking about the weather, telling time, asking for help, and giving directions. The lessons include many conversations involving friends and family (= wife, husband, boy/girlfriend, son, daughter), but never are the words "brother," "sister," "parents," etc. mentioned. There were precious few adjectives and adverbs beyond "big," "good," "interesting," "beautiful," "late," "early," "fast," "slow," "expensive" and "cheap." The only colors you'll learn are red and white, and only in the context of wine! (Wow, these people like their beer and wine!) The lessons do cover quite a bit about sentence structure, but are lacking in explanation for some important grammar nuances. The female speaker in Level 2 speaks faster than the woman who spoke in Level 1. I found that the same basic phrases were over-repeated and that took time away from introducing new material. Notwithstanding, this course is still MILES above any other I've encountered. I hope that Pimsleur ultimately releases some more advanced courses.
