Publisher's Summary

Japanese 4 covers a variety of everyday topics. What if your phone's battery is running low? What if you forgot your wallet on the bus? What if you're late for an appointment or to meet your friends? Do you know the correct way of dipping yourself into an onsen (hot springs) at a traditional Japanese inn? We've got you covered! In Japanese 4, you'll be immersed in the culture while you are learning the language!

Some of the activities covered in Japanese 4:

  • You'll visit a Japanese garden and have tea, go shopping, try on clothes, visit Japanese hot springs.
  • You'll learn to negotiate lodging or plan a move.
  • You'll learn how to get help finding something you've lost, and how to ask for and understand detailed directions.
  • You'll be able to discuss the seasons, historic cities and buildings, sports and outdoor activities and hobbies, express appreciation to your hosts or friends, and amazement and wonder when trying new things.

Today in Japan, three writing systems are combined, with Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana all appearing within a single sentence. In Japanese 4 you will begin to learn to read the Hiragana alphabet. There are 46 basic Hiragana syllables, with additional modified syllables that represent voiced and contracted sounds. Japanese is usually written from top to bottom in vertical columns and from right to left. This course will expand your vocabulary: you'll learn to share your impressions and opinions, express gratitude, describe people and places, and convey your preferences with characteristic Japanese politeness and grace.

The Japanese Language

Japanese has many "registers" or levels of politeness. Throughout every level of your Pimsleur course, you will learn how to speak at a polite register, which is appropriate in virtually any situation you are likely to encounter in Japan. In Level 4, you will also learn some ways of speaking in a less formal manner.

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." ( AudioFile magazine)

Great follow up to a great learning series!

I had lamented for years that the Pimsleur set ended after the 3rd lesson. I was not aware that there was a 4th and now a 5th set.

I was excited to begin the set and have not been disappointed. The set begins where the previous session ended and begins to explore, what I consider, more complex sentences.

I feel that it is helping me quite a bit!

I know folks complain about the repetition, but I am a firm believer that mastery comes from repetition, as tedious as it may seem. The constant repetition helps train the ear and allows one to train the pronunciation.

I am fairly adept at pronouncing Japanese words, but when trying to speak at a natural pace, I stumble all over myself. The only way to get over that (for me at least) is the constant repetition. Even things that seem very hard become easy with enough repetition. There is no shortcut...

I also reached out to the Pimsleur team and asked if I could get access to their app. They indicated that folks who buy from Audible do get access to the app, but need to pay an additional $50.

That fee is waived if you purchase another lesson. Obviously I plan to purchase the 5th, so I am very pleased.

I highly recommend this series to folks learning the language.
