Publisher's Summary

As punishment for his part in an attempted coup in heaven, the archangel Michael is banished to Earth. The holiest of the angelic host has to learn to live as a mortal - not an easy job when you’ve got Satan as a next-door neighbor.

Michael soon finds that being a good person involves more than helping out at Sunday school and attending church coffee mornings. He has to find his purpose in life, deal with earthly temptations, and solve a mystery involving some unusual monks and a jar of very dangerous jam.

Heide Goody and Iain Grant have come up with this wild comedy that features spear-wielding cub scouts, accidental transvestites, King Arthur, a super-intelligent sheepdog, hallucinogenic snacks, evil peacocks, old ladies with biscuits, naked paintball, stolen tractors, clairvoyant computers, the Women’s Institute, and way too much alcohol.

I Have Rarely Laughed So Often Or So Loudly

I tend not to review books, because I almost never read reviews. With this series, however, it must be done.

In the spirit of Clovenhoof, I'm going to overshare:
This series of books has made me laugh so often, so loudly, and so forcefully that negatively physical consequences have occurred that required immediate cleanup.

The material given to Matthew Lloyd Davies is phenomenal, but his rich characters and fantastic voicing for each character truly makes both Clovenhoof and Pigeonwings two of my favorite audiobooks, ever.

Better than the 1st, which was hysterical

This smoothed out some of the bumpiness and over-the-top foul humor of the first.

The humor is edgy without being mean, blasphemous without being unkind, extremely witty with some moments of pure beauty.

Clovenhoof remains absolutely disgusting, frequently inspired, and fundamentally decent under the mess. Michael develops very believably, and Nerys reclaims some of her own messiness without becoming a slave to it this time. Actually, all the characters evolve, gaining depth and simultaneously developing anchors to their own shallowness. Like people do.

The narrator is outstanding. He smooths over choppy or slightly tedious bits. He really brings the characters to life most vividly! He uses more aspects of individual voice production, such as speed and enunciation as well as accent and timbre, so I can tell who's speaking immediately.

For those not attached to primness and who have a lively & irreverent sense of humor, very highly recommended.

Great followup

The comedy in this one definitely lived up to clovenhoof. It's quite similar in the style of supernatural sitcom with an interesting story playing out.

A great continuation......

.....of the antics of Clovenhoof and friends. Jeremy (and Naris) continue to step in it dragging their friends with them, and still come up smelling like..... apple brandy. I am a fan of all things Arthurian and was pleasantly surprised to see a bit of the legend incorporated into this book. I once again highly recommend Pigeowings and am starting the next book today!

Second in the Clovenhoof Series is Great too.

If you are easily offended by the portrayal of religious icons, then this book may not be right for you. However, if you sit back and laugh at the celestial foibles of an archangel, Michel, who's been banished to Earth and his neighbour, Satan, who's lost his job in Hell after years of faithful service to the damned, you may enjoy the Clovenhoof series. Neither of them was given sufficient training for their new lives, and the results are historical. Personally, I'd nominate the neighbours with whom they interact for sainthood as these two bumble their way through suburban England.

As good as the first

Pigeonwings was as much fun as Clovenhoof. Both of these books were so enjoyable. I love when a story can make me laugh out loud, and I did with this book as well. Now do we not only have the devil living on earth, but an archangel as well, and they are neighbors! What could go wrong?

lol funny

I love this team of authors and reader. They have the best grasp of humor and humanity since Sir Pratchett. Their series are delightfully re-readable.

Loved it, laughed until I cried several times and can only hope the rest of the series is this good.

Even better than Clovenhoof....!

Loved the first book but this was even better. Brilliant characters, brilliant narration and even had me giggling out loud on the tube journey home.
The satirical style and commentary on modern life reminds me of Terry Pratchett in places.

Very funny.

I’m really enjoying this series, it just gets funnier as it goes along. It reminds me of the HHGTTG books. Looking forward to reading book 3.

Still great

A great sequel to clovenhoof, I absolutely love the 'odd couple' aesthetic now that Michael has to live on Earth too. almost a great sitcom feel to it. funny and well narrated.

A fun second book in the series

A bit of a fun mad caper with laugh out loud moments.
A fun story with good pace. What's not to like? The devil, a fallen archangel, a sexually repressed nerd and a whole family of welsh women who are sexually liberated. An enjoyable story and just the right balance of bonkers.

Some slightly dubious accents but overall good narration.
Slightly off-putting background noises on the recording, at one point I could hear other people talking. But there's also what sounds like a hungry stomach sound, though it's surely too often to be real? If so, someone please send the narrator food!

Sheer bliss!!

The second book in this series and a fantastic follow on to Clovenhoof which I massively enjoyed. Jeremy is still stuck on earth but now joined by Archangel Michael, he of the title role. It was hilarious listening to Michael learning about day to day events and bodily functions whilst Clovenhoof is up to his old tricks of causing as much madness and mayhem as possible. Seriously, would you leave this man in charge of a troupe of boy scouts, even the little horrors we encounter in this book?! Brilliant stuff, aided and abetted by a peculiar order of monks. One of the best bits and real laugh out loud moments was the addition to certain familiar faces to the renovated tapestries - I listened to this in car and people must think I'm daft, chuckling along while I'm driving! Can't wait to dive into the next book!
