Publisher's Summary

Investigative journalist Joe Oaks is on the trail of a strange creature caught on some amateur film footage: a figure so deformed it can hardly be human.

Recently arrived on the remote Scottish island where it was sighted, he is determined to expose the creature as the religious hoax it so obviously must be. But his confrontation, and its violent and bloody aftermath, is so catastrophic that it forces him to question the nature of evil and whether he might not be responsible for the terrible crimes about to unfold.

Saved by Peter Kenny

This book starts well but about a third of the way in it flags a bit. Peter Kenny kept me listening with his clear characters and emotive dialogue

Third time reading , 1st time audio

I couldn't fault this audio at all , the reading was so so good and enjoyable
Also the actors where brilliant and believable.
The story itself has to be one of the best thriller novels I've read as of yet with a twist and turn at every point !!

Creepy and unsettling.

Having read most of Mo Hayder's books and been a fan, this is the first one I have listened to. Although not her best, it is creepy and unsettling. At times the pace and tension made my heart race. She is brilliant at creating scenarios that border into horror and tap into our darkest fears.
Being a scouser I enjoyed the narrator, but the singsong element to our accent did jar at times against the horrors he was describing.
Would recommend, but as usual with Hayder, not for the faint hearted!

Spooky book becomes comical due to upbeat narrator

This was my first Mo Hayder book and when I read it the odd 10 years ago, I remember it created such a wonderfully creepy feeling of unease. Not many books do that, and I've always looked forward to re-reading it again.
When I found it as an audio book the time was right for some late evening walks in the forest.
BUT, oh no, the chills are not to be! The narrator completely misunderstands the book! He reads it with a jolly lilt to his voice, which utterly and completely removes any form of malice or threat generated by the story. Now I'm halfway through the book and i might have to use my right to return it. A big shame on such a yummy book.

With the correct narrator this wouldbe a superb horror package.

Bloody brilliant. I didn't see the final evil twist coming until the last 10 minutes of the book. Deffinately a must read book.

Typical Mo Hayder style

The writer kept you guessing till the last chapter. Excellent read. Highly recommend.
Not as good as the jack caffrey series, but not far off. I would rate this book 4.5 stars if I could
