Publisher's summary

The electrifying new thriller from international best seller Karin Slaughter explores the deadly secrets kept between a mother and daughter.

"Slaughter has outdone herself with Pieces of Her—a novel that sets the standard for psychological thriller writing. Rarely in fiction have the past and the present collided with such force and in such a distinctive and compelling voice" (Jeffery Deaver)

What if the person you thought you knew best turned out to be someone you never knew at all?

Andrea Oliver's mother, Laura, is the perfect small-town mum. Laura lives a quiet but happy life in sleepy beachside Belle Isle. She's a pillar of the community: a speech therapist, business owner, and everybody's friend. And she's never kept a secret from anyone. Or so Andrea thinks.

When Andrea is caught in a random violent attack at a shopping mall, Laura intervenes and acts in a way that is unrecognizable to her daughter. It"s like Laura is a completely different person—and that's because she was. Thirty years ago. Before Andrea. Before Belle Isle.

Laura is hailed as a hero for her actions at the mall, but 24 hours later she is in hospital, shot by an intruder, who's spent decades trying to track her down.

What is Andrea's mother trying to hide? As elements of the past return and put them both in danger, Andrea is left to piece together Laura's former identity and discover the truth—for better or worse—about her mother. Is the gentle, loving woman who raised her also a violent killer?

Soooooo good!

I started off by watching the series and I enjoyed it so much I got the book, I was not disappointed! This was a brilliant story, written very well and built up through both present and past perspectives. It was hard to put down, I ended up finishing it in 2 days!

Sickeningly gripping from the very start

Very powerful writing, extensive vocabulary use and the storyline keeps you always guessing. The narrator uses great intonation and adds to this exceptional story. I couldn’t put it down.

Fascinating

The Andrea character struck me a a little 2 dimensional but I enjoyed the references to militant activism and how easy it is for the average person to be sucked into a vortex of destruction. I wanted more from Laura at the end... it didn’t ring true that she would be so hypnotised by the psycho dude... he had killed one of her babies and tried to kill the other. I believe that mother lion would take over.

It was ok

The story was alright. The main character Andrea was irritating in her mute behaviours, I just wanted to shake her.

DNF

Have read so many books from Karin so I Highly recommend her.

Unfortunately, I couldn't finish this one. the main character, the daughter ... I forget her name. is one of the most irritating characters, think " 31 year old woman, that has the life skills of a teen. "

Don't waste your credits choose a diff book

Starts good but ends frustrating

The story was fast paced and interesting for the first half but I lost interest when it got to the militant activism stuff. I had to go over the second half twice to understand what it was about. It’s funny because Andi’s character is a bit annoying in the beginning but she improves, in the end it was her mother’s character that annoyed the hell out of me. Hated the ending.
I watched the Netflix and it was OK but again the ending just annoyed me all over again.

Still not as bad as the Netflix series

I struggled with homicidal urges regarding the novel's first person narrator throughout; certainly one of the most irritating I have ever encountered in any work of fiction. Absolute chore to finish. The Audible narrator did the best she could with the poor material.

Too annoying to listen to

The main character was so stupid and so frustrating that I couldn’t get past a couple of chapters.

One of the best books I’ve read (listened to) in ages

I absolutely loved it. It was slow to get started, and if you don’t like time jumps or character switches, which I typically don’t, you may not like this one. But I was pleasantly surprised. The Netflix series strays too far from the book to be great, but it’s still alright. If you do give the book a go, persist until at least 1/3 of the way through, because I almost gave it up a little way in and am so glad I didn’t. Andy is a much more likeable character than Laura but it really makes you think about how you would handle being thrown into these scenarios. 10/10.
