Publisher's summary

A secret government unit is formed under the oversight of Adam Harrison, famed paranormal investigator. The six members he’s gathered know a little of the otherworldly - each has honed a psychic talent of their own.

Jackson Crow, part English, part Cheyenne, heads the group. Haunted by his experience with an ancestral ghost who saved his life as a child, and the recent murders of two previous teammates, Jackson can’t tell if Adam’s demoted him or given him an extraordinary opportunity. Despite his link to the realm of spirits, he’s well aware that the living commit the most heinous crimes, with spiritualist charlatans existing merely to fool and seduce the unwary.

To counterbalance Jackson’s careful skepticism, Adam Harrison has paired him with Angela Hawkins, a young woman who learned the painful lesson of loss at an early age. A police officer utilizing her paranormal intuition in Virginia, she already has her hands full. But Adam’s call to New Orleans is strong.

The case: In a historic mansion in New Orleans’ French Quarter, a senator’s wife falls to her death from a balcony. Most think she jumped, distraught over the loss of her young son. Some say she was pushed. And yet others believe she was beckoned by the ghostly spirits that inhabit the house - once the site of a serial killer’s grisly work. Whether supernatural or all too human, crimes of passion, greed, and desire will cast the pair into danger of losing their lives... and their immortal souls.

Surpisingly good!!

I had this author recommended to me so this is my first book of hers that I have read. I must admit that I was expecting a shallow, typical read of sci-fi. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed her story telling. The ending was not what I expected and I must say that I just enjoyed her book. I will buy more!

Good story. Annoying narration.

This is my first Graham book, and I enjoyed the story. Fun, light read, cheesy romance tossed in but not distracting from the mystery. The narration is fine when no real creativity is necessary, but when required to do anything more than simply read aloud the narrator is just plain annoying. The female voices and a couple of the younger males do sound just like Mickey Mouse with a horrendous "southern" twist. The story is interesting enough to keep listening, but it was a strain. I was elated to find no other Graham books are narrated by Cummings.

Great Book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have told others about this book because it is fun and fills the need when I want suspense.

Any additional comments?

I had read this book before I listened to it. I wanted to re-read it so I got the audiobook so I could get back in the series. I love these books. I like that Graham really develops her characters over the book. You can see that she started with a sceptic and moved on to make him a believer. I do think the romance came on a little strong but that's ok. Sometimes in life that happens.

Fun listen

Would you listen to Phantom Evil again? Why?

It was a fun listen. Not the best performance and a somewhat predictable storyline, but fun.

If you’ve listened to books by Heather Graham before, how does this one compare?

This was similar to the last book I heard - much the same story.

What three words best describe Jeffrey Cummings’s voice?

His Southern accent is hard to bear if one is, in fact, Southern.

Ghosts, Intrigue, Murder and a Wonderful Plot!

If you could sum up Phantom Evil in three words, what would they be?

Ghosts, Intrigue, Drama

What was one of the most memorable moments of Phantom Evil?

There are many, but it is basically the same as my favorite because of the humor in the scene. I can just imagine Jackson's sense of shock when he first meets Angela.

Which scene was your favorite?

As mentioned above, it is the same scene I have listed as most memorable. When Jackson meets Angela. Her actions make Jackson question their current assignment. It is quite humorous.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the young woman calls her mother to say she is coming home. Very well done.

Any additional comments?

Besides the fact that this book is about "ghost hunters", it touches on many subjects relevant to America today. Crooked politicians, New Orleans since Katrina, cults and religion. Well done!

Beginning of What should be a good series

Would you listen to Phantom Evil again? Why?

Yes, because I enjoy the paranormal mystery and romance written in it. However, the dialogue is very bland and gets annoying after awhile.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jackson Crow. Because he's tough, sexy, and in charge.

What aspect of Jeffrey Cummings’s performance would you have changed?

Jeffrey Cummings did not seem to know how to do his accents for the different people very well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Just "ugh"

You know how it is when you invested time into a book, and you're determined not to give up on said book, but you just soldier on. Ugh. I held on to the end because I wanted to know "who dunnit." I really disliked the narration -- the accents, the cadence, the delivery. There were lots of disjointed characters, and the two primary characters felt the need to jump into bed for unexplained and awkward reasons. I wanted to like this book and this "supernatural" detective team, but I won't be reading any more from this author. Sorry.

Not Her Best...

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Not quite finished with it but so glad I've read all the other Krewe of Hunters books. Also, I'm glad Jackson and Angela's character's developed more in other story lines because this one isn't the best.

Would you be willing to try another book from Heather Graham? Why or why not?

I've read nearly all of her books. Surprised I hadn't read this one yet, although glad I didn't.

What three words best describe Jeffrey Cummings’s voice?

It's ok. Much prefer Luke Daniels. Since he's the one I've listened to the most I was left a bit disappointed listening to Mr. Cummings.

What would have made this romance irresistible?

Better chemistry between the two leads.

Any additional comments?

If this is your first read for Heather Graham, don't let it deter you. Her other books are great. Give them a chance.

No accents please

I enjoyed the story. I like the narrators voice and cadence but his accents were awful.
