Story
The holidays are upon us, and this year Audible is very happy to present to our members one of Charles Dickens’ most popular Christmas stories, The Cricket on the Hearth. This holiday classic (original subtitle: “A Fairy Tale of Home”) tells the innocent, picturesque, and charming story of a poor family and their would-be guardian angel; in short, a delightful vision of Victorian Christmas. As always, a great story calls for a great voice, so we’ve brought in legendary actor and record-breaking Audie and Grammy award-winning narrator Jim Dale ( The Night Circus). Happy holidays and happy listening!

All the larger-than-life characters in Paul's supporting cast are here, including Babe the Blue Ox, eating her ton of grain a day, and Hotbiscuit Sally, with her acre-and-a-half griddle. Publisher's Summary
Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) had a lifelong attraction to children's stories. By far the best known of all his music inspired by children's literature is Peter and the Wolf. Prokofiev was asked to write a piece that would introduce young audiences to the workings of an orchestra and its instruments. Peter and the Wolf showcases the composer's superb ability to bring a simple story to life, giving each character a recognizable motive and instrumental color.
The story is about the young boy Peter who, together with his friend the bird, manages to catch a hungry wolf who has come to his garden, looking for food and chasing all the animals, including a duck whom he manages to swallow. After the wolf has been caught with a lasso, hunters arrive, intending to shoot him. Instead, Peter proposes to bring him to the zoo, and the hunters, Peter, his grandfather, and the animals form a procession to deliver the wolf.

New favorite version of this children's classic
Sophia Loren does a great job narrating the story. I love how expressive her voice is throughout. This will be the version I listen to going forward.
The music sounds fine. When I listen to Peter and the Wolf I listen primarily to the performer, the orchestra is secondary since they all play the piece well.
It is the story I remember, no changes there. Poor duck.
Previous favorite versions were the Sean Connery reading and the Disney version read by Sterling Holloway (the original Winnie-the-Pooh).

This is GREAT!
I remember listening to this in music class when I was little and I loved it so much. Now that I’ve found it again, I listen to all the time! I think it’s very calming at night.
Sophia Loren did a very good job, but I prefer the Disney version.
