This should be a TV series!

I absolutely adore this series. I found it last year around Halloween and I’m happy to delve back into Sugarland again. Excellent writing, characters and narration. Tavia Gilbert is amazing at all the voices, especially Frankie. This was my favorite book yet, just keeps getting better.

(Spoilers) I loved the direction Beau’s character went in, both laugh out loud funny and concerning. I loathe Virginia Wydell but I think you’re supposed to lol. I’m a NYer and I can’t really relate to this abusive relationship. If Verity were from NY, she’d tear her cross right off Virginia’s neck or threaten to breakup with Ellis if he didn’t either get it back or stop speaking to his mother until she gave it back. But that’s part of what makes Verity so interesting and amazing. She is always willing to help the dead or the living, including those who do not deserve it.

I was braced for Beau’s gf to be the murder victim, not the murderess! Wow! Somehow i think she was the scariest of all the murderers in the series so far bc she seemed the most innocent! Her lack of remorse was truly chilling. loved Margery and she may be my fav ghost that Verity has met. The whole backdrop of the Astair estate was sooo captivating and the EJ twist was delightful and heartbreaking. The description of the tar closing in on Verity when she finds the briefcase is phenomenal.

I did wonder how old EJ was if she was born in 1916. Not sure what year Verity is supposed to exist in but it seems like EJ must have been close to 100. The intermingling of the ghost plane and real world is so cool, always written creatively and clearly. I loved Frankie’s sparring with Declerk and it was yet another impressive accent of Tavia’s. It’s crystal clear which character is speaking and she even sounds authentic as the male characters.

I highly recommend this book, especially for a Halloween read. I usually detest first person narration but I can overlook it for this series. I can’t wait to finish the series and I hope that more continue to release 👻

Looking forward to the next book. I’m addicted!

The books are fun and clean, without profanity and obnoxious over-rated sexual content. The narrator has a wonderful voice and makes the books even more fun.

fun and sleuthing

cozy-mystery, supernatural, suspense, ghosts, family-dynamics, pet, situational-humor, snarky

Flappers and gangsters and food trucks, oh my!
Sugarland Tennessee is supposed to be a sleepy Southern town, but it is really a home to all kinds of ghostly former residents. Verity has a connection with ghosts ever since she inadvertently messed up the remains of a local gangster who now reluctantly works with her on murder cases both new and historical. This installment has one of each, but we're not talking CSI here, more like Nick and Nora Charles with no money. Most of the humor is situational, but it's still pretty snarky. Fun book in a great series, don't miss it!
Tavia Gilbert has an interesting dramatic way of narrating.

WELL WORTH LISTENING

Yes the skunk introduction was dragged out toooo much but once past that the book was entertaining and interesting, there was so much happening which made the ghost murderer a real surprise when they were revealed. It is two mysteries in one really with the art a nice touch and the southern entitled rich family giving me quite the chuckle. I liked how it all came together and recommend this if you have a sense of humour and a little patience.

Roaring 20's Ghostly Cold Case and Hot and Now Pie

That time of the year has rolled around once again when the air gets crisp, the leaves are rustling, and its time for a new mystery to solve with my favorite 1920's gangster ghost and his sweet southern gal pal.

Pecan Pies and Dead Guys is the seventh installment in a delightful paranormal cozy mystery series. Each book can be read as standalone, but there is a clear series arc that helps the reader understand the story surrounding the mystery- or mysteries as there are more than one.

In the last book, Verity and Frankie promised a ghostly police inspector that they would help him solve his last unsolved crime. He calls in the favor and they help investigate an unsolved murder that took place at an appropriately creepy, abandoned mansion outside of town. At the same time, Verity's boyfriend Ellis is working on a present day murder and Verity is receiving mysterious pecan pies while her ex is causing her trouble once again.

I love that the amateur detecting team is a sweet lady and a jaded ghostly gangster. These two crack me up the way they go about things and get into trouble without trying real hard. Okay, so Frankie is a natural at it because he still hangs out with his old ghostly gang members and still thinks like a crook, but Verity just sort of trips over trouble. They are joined many times by Verity's love interest, police detective, Ellis Wydell.

Speaking of Ellis, the situation Verity is still in with the Wydells is a ticklish one. Ellis' mom hates her because of their rocky past dealings, but Verity is trying hard for Ellis' sake. Ellis cares for his family, but he's still considered the black sheep because he didn't go into politics or their family law firm like the others- no, he wished to protect and serve as a small town police detective. Ellis is a sweetie and I love how he accepts what he can't see when it comes to Verity's ghostly adventures and supports her when he can.

The mysteries in this one were good ones. The historical ghost mystery was definitely more intriguing to me as Verity and Frankie worked a case of a murder that happened back in the '20's. The modern murder didn't get as much attention, but it wasn't that hard to figure out really. There are some good suspenseful action scenes that keep things exciting between Frankie's wise cracks and Verity's investigation work. For the first time, there is a mild cliffhanger that has me anxious to get my paws on the next release pronto.

Tavia Gilbert continues to sparkle as Verity, Frankie and all the cast from ghostly to lively.

All in all, this was another solid gold installment in a favorite paranormal cozy mystery series that I can happily recommend to fans of the genre. The ghostly creepiness can get suspenseful, but is definitely within the comfort zone of paranormal light weights.
