Story
The year was 1803. It was a time when the West was not only frontier, it was the undiscovered country. It was the time of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, before the trains of Prairie Schooners and settlers, before cowboys or cattle drives, before Colonel Colt and the six-shooter, and nearly a three quarters of a century before George Armstrong Custer and his men were killed at Little Big Horn. It was a time when the western fur trade was new, and only the first of the mountain men had left the Mississippi behind on their journey into the wilderness.

Was it justice... or revenge? What drove a simple farmer to set out on an impossible quest after a gang of bloodthirsty killers that raped and murdered his wife and slit his small son's throat? Their trail led him halfway across the country and deep into Mexico. One by one he tracked them down and brought them to justice, sometimes at the end of a short rope, more often in front of his fast guns, and he didn't care which.

Story
In the early 1870's, the young state of Texas was struggling to survive. Its vast, undeveloped land of over 260 thousand square miles became a haven for the lawless. Murderers, rustlers and renegade bands of hostile Indians and Comanchero roamed the vast wastelands of west Texas with only a narrow river separating them from the sanctuary of Mexico. One group of dedicated lawmen stood between this element and the law-abiding citizenry - the Texas Rangers. This is the story of one of those men.

Johnny Shooter was sentenced to hang at noon. But Judge Isaac Parker, widely known as the "Hanging Judge", made Johnny an offer he couldn't refuse. The judge made him a Deputy United State Marshal, then sent his new deputy after the worst-of-the-worst outlaws the Indian territory had to offer, with the orders not to burden the court by bringing them back for trial. Now, rumor has it that whenever outlaws gather around a campfire, the word is: "The only thing worse than standing before the Hanging Judge is hearing that Johnny Shooter is on your trail!"

The American Fur Company needed 100 enterprising men to travel up the Missouri River - the longest in North America - all the way to its source. Story
The great state of Texas is a land of opportunity. For outlaws. And horse thieves. And cattle rustlers. Not to mention bank robbers, train robbers, and anything-that-ain’t-nailed-down robbers. The state’s governor, Richard B. Hubbard, is at the end of his rope. He wants to clean up Texas once and for all - and he’s desperate enough to try something crazy: hire a man who can do what the Texas Rangers can’t. A man not tied down by a wife or children. Or rules. Who’s not afraid to go outside the law. Who will protect the good people of Texas at any cost.

The trio's target is the famous US Deputy Marshal Dove who arrested one of their kin - and who's sitting in the bar near Will Tanner.

Story
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Publisher's Summary
When Ruben Beeler joins Marshal Marion Daniels to investigate an incident of theft and murder, Rube is plunged into a world of dark deeds and black hearts. With the help of an abused and courageous young woman, Rube, Marion, and Marshal Addriss Tippideaux head south of the Missouri line into the hills and hollows of Northern Arkansas, and take on an entire clan to see that justice is done. Suspicion of outsiders and hate for the government abounds, and the marshals are much farther from home than the miles they've traveled. Revenge is the order of the day and life is cheap on The Payback Trail.

David R. Lewis is now one of my favorites!
David Lewis is a gifted author who is equally gifted as a narrator. This is a thoroughly enjoyable "Western" with seamless masterful narration of many different voices. You have no idea that one person is narrating all the different characters. Action, comedy, exciting plot, theme: crystal clear of good over evil, all topped off with a "happy ending". I loved all 5 audiobooks in this series and am sad there is no more. I loved the stories, characters, plots and did not want them to end. Please write more Mr. Lewis!!!

An Excellent Series!
This series takes you on a ride, literally... it's great to get to know these characters better and watch they and their friendship evolve. Westerns are not my genre by any stretch, but man, did this series capture me. Fantastic story with a top notch narration by the Author. The voices are so distinct I would recognize them anywhere. These stories have something for everyone.

Characters with the kick of a six Gage!
What did you love best about Payback Trail?
The trail takes Rube and Marion to a land of hillbilly's and dark deeds in strange land. Rube meets a different side of womanhood from a young abused women to an old bag who henpecks the pride out of her man. Colorful characters like targets at the country fair pop up catching your attention. This s a really fun book that manages to entertain while getting you involved with the folks along the trail. This is surly the most humorist book of the trail series.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Payback Trail?
meeting the young girl in jail.
Which scene was your favorite?
meeting the young girl and the hog man. Also the loud mouth old lady.
Any additional comments?
Excellent story teller and really like the music in-between the chapters

Satisfying Set of Mythological Stories
I have not encountered anything quite like these reads. Almost all my listening is non fiction and many of those are epics such as the Durant series on civilization, Sheerers Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, Toland, Keegan and many others. My collection includes a couple dozen of The Great Courses but there are some fiction pieces including most of Kings Dark Tower books and some others.
These relatively short Westerns stand apart from anything else. They are almost like post modern scripts from a weekly 1930's radio series. The singing cowboys are replaced with an altogether different sort of idealized American Folk Hero. But I like this new mythical world of days gone by. And I recommend it to non-Americans to take a bit seriously. The Illiad and The Odessey they are not but its the same sort of cutural relationship imho.

If you could sum up Payback Trail in three words, what would they be?
Fun to read.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Payback Trail?
The entire book was memorable.
Have you listened to any of David R. Lewis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Payback Trail was my first experience with this author. I searched for more titles as soon as I had completed this book. Having found several more books written by Mr. Lewis I look forward to many more hours of listening pleasure.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
