Publisher's summary

You can be a VII if you give everything.

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked - surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed...and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose - and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.

Not Bad

Where does Pawn rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is the first one, but I like it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kitty, because she showed a lot of courage to step forward to be a VII and leave all of what she knew behind. Thankfully she got to see Benjy again.

Have you listened to any of Lameece Issaq’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. I don't like how she narrarates the men/boy's voices.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, when they went to the place where Knox had gotten the guns, and Lila was there.

Any additional comments?

No.

Solid, enjoyable YA

Any additional comments?

I grabbed Pawn at random through audible, and I'm glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed this plot, these characters (Nox was my favorite), and Carter's writing style. The whole of this novel is enjoyable, and I'm a little upset that its sequel, Captive, isn't available through audible as of my writing this review (Nov 2014. NOTE: It IS available in hardcover now).

For a YA novel, there is a little toeing of propriety at the beginning, but I don't think it would stop me from letting a teenager read it. Relationships are part of their lives, why shouldn't it be part of their characters'? Kitty makes some choices that would make parents cringe, but considering her surroundings and the few options she has in life, it's hard not to agree with those choices. Carter has made someone very real in Kitty, and I love that she didn't feel the need to hold anything back.

Not too bad.

I had no expectations. I liked the narrators voice but every character had the same voice too. I didn't like that I could hear her mouth noises and swallowing. The story was interesting but not much attachment or emotion. I am not sure if I will listen to the next in the series. I wanted it to be meatier.

Future full of unfairness

The cast / rang mark is determining the rights and abilities of citizens. The single test at the age of 17 shapes the whole persons future. Those who are not smart enough are sent elsewhere and never return, but those who are burn in the families with high rang has unfair advantages. Kate, ranked 3, is the girl from society bottom. She is given a chance to change her life and to become the member of the ruling family. She replaced recently disappeard Lilla, rank 7. Thanks to recent technology her outlook is changed and her rank is faked. Kate knows what it is to have nothing and she has enough courrage to accept the challenges.

don't have to pay attention while commuting

Is there anything you would change about this book?

It's a young adult read that doesn't transition enough into being enjoyable for adults too. The issues are a bit too simplistic. I'd try to enrich the subplots, but then it would lose its place in its genre. So, leave the book as it, it just wasn't right for me.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

It was good as it was actually. I'd have psychoanalyzed the cast a bit more. More followthrough.

Which character – as performed by Lameece Issaq – was your favorite?

Can't recall. Enjoyed the reading overall though.

Did Pawn inspire you to do anything?

Pawn put me in mind of Hunger Games, wherein you can rebuild a lot about a person's externals.

Any additional comments?

Good book for listening to but not giving your full attention to. So like, while driving, doing errands, etc.

Solid narration; Entertaining

I thought the narration was very "real" and tone fit the story well. Good listen even if it isn't the most incredible story I have ever heard. Entertaining.

good story

liked the story but not a fan of the voices the orator put on. I think the story could have finished with 1 book but I'll give the next one a try.

Gottasee how it develops

I really like how the story unfolded so far, though I'd wish Aimée Carter gave the characters a little more depth. Some parts of the story seem like wishful thinking.

Hunger games, Twilight, Etc.. Pawn fits in nicely!

Would you consider the audio edition of Pawn to be better than the print version?

Unknown, I do not read printed books. After finding audible I doubt I could go back to it now if I ever did.

What did you like best about this story?

Without spoilers I'd say I enjoyed the twists & turns that kept me guessing, trying to figure things out and finding myself surprised again & again

Any additional comments?
