Publisher's summary

Heart Shots: The Shocking True Story of a Dark Day in the Michigan and Indiana State Police is an action-packed true crime thriller.

Five shoot-outs, each more bizarre than the previous, sprinkled with suspenseful interludes, make for a compelling book. The story unfolds in 1957 when a WWII veteran, convicted sexual predator, and parole absconder, picks up a hitchhiker in Maine, who is a drifter with no criminal record. Matched, they embark on an undetected nationwide crime spree until an intuitive Michigan trooper begins to unmask their criminality.

Shot three times and left for dead, this trooper is the first of nine heroes to emerge in the following 10 hours. The character of these protagonists (one a young civilian mother) is developed so the listener feels a kinship to each, shadowing them to where their turn comes to stand in harm’s way. Heart Shots is more than its headline: “Ten hours, nine heroes, five heart shots, three abductions, two widows, and one fatherless son.”

Fascinating storytelling of a sad event

Clif Edward chronicles the crime spree of two lawbreakers that were responsible for ending the lives of two state troopers and causing a wild ten hour chase that started in Michigan, and finally ended in Indiana. One of the villains served time for raping a nine year old child, before recruiting a true partner in crime, committing an astonishing twenty one robberies in fourteen states. Things turned bloody in Michigan, where they murdered a state trooper, and wounded another.

Edwards provides fascinating storytelling, taking the listener back in time to 1957, and to the sites of each of the crimes committed along the way, until one of the fugitives was killed, and other was finally captured. Edwards details the trial of Victor Whitley, who received two life sentences, avoiding the death penalty, and unimaginably, would later be paroled after serving more than twenty years behold bars. Lincoln Gillett also provides riveting narration.

Loved it!

As an Ann Arbor local and true crime indulger, I was instantly drawn into this story. It’s one I hadn’t hear of before which made it even more interesting to dive into to. I must say, I was NOT disappointed! The story was great and the narrator, Lincoln, kept me fully engaged. He had me completely engulfed in the story from start to finish. I’m new to audible and looking forward to hearing more of his narrations!
