In 2008 veteran journalist Evan Wright, acclaimed for his New York Times best-selling book Generation Kill and co-writer of the Emmy-winning HBO series it spawned, began a series of conversations with super-criminal Jon Roberts, star of the fabulously successful documentary Cocaine Cowboys. Those conversations would last three years, during which time Wright came to realize that Roberts was much more than the de-facto “transportation chief” of the Medellin Cartel during the 1980s, much more than a facilitator of a national drug epidemic.

Joe Barboza knew that there were two requirements for getting inducted into the Mafia. You had to be Sicilian. And you had to commit a contract killing. The New Bedford-born mobster was a proud Portuguese, not Sicilian, but his dream to be part of La Cosa Nostra proved so strong that he thought he could create a loophole. Barboza’s legacy, buried for years thanks to the murders or deaths of its participants, is finally coming to light and being told in its unvarnished brutality by one of America’s most respected true crime writers.

Publisher's Summary
Shaun Attwood arrived in Phoenix, Arizona, a penniless business graduate from a small industrial town in England. Within a decade, he became a stock-market millionaire. But he was leading a double life.
After taking his first Ecstasy pill at a rave in Manchester as a shy student, Shaun became intoxicated by the party lifestyle that would change his fortune. Years later, in the Arizona desert, Shaun became submerged in a criminal underworld, throwing parties for thousands of ravers and running an Ecstasy ring in competition with the Mafia mass murderer Sammy 'The Bull' Gravano.
As greed and excess tore through his life, Shaun had eye-watering encounters with Mafia hit men and crystal-meth addicts, enjoyed extravagant debauchery with superstar DJs and glitter girls, and ingested enough drugs to kill a herd of elephants. This is his story.

Bad narrator or robot?
The narrator is making this story seem like a joke. His emotions ride on one road and never veer off, ever. This is a story with explicit drug use with some sexuality thrown in and this narrator keeps the same tone and it's completely fighting against everything in the book. It is so weird to listen to that it could be a skit in SNL. I sound mean but I can't find the correct words to describe this strange experience. I haven't read any reviews but I would bet money that this is mentioned in EVERY review. Fingers crossed for a different narrator next book

Hard to Believe
Watching Shaun on YouTube, he seems to be such a wonderful man. But just like everyone there's a dark side. This is Shaun's dark side to his life many many years ago. Thankfully he's leading a respectable life in England. Too bad he's been deported, I'd love to meet him & talk to him about the Steve Avery case.

The story is good, the performance SUCKS.
Perhaps it's because I was first exposed to Mr Atwood in a YouTube interview... so it's my opinion that this book must be read by a Brit. The wank who reads this is quite literally the worst audio book performer I've ever heard. I couldn't make it past the second chapter. Gonna try to get a refund actually.

Incredible
I stayed up at night wanting to finish this book. The narrator was very good. The story sounded fictional. I couldn't comprehend why someone will leave a job where he earns millions of dollars to drug trafficking. By the end of the book it became clear to me that this is happening every day in our world. I hope this book will assist people struggling with drug addiction to rethink their destiny.

Much longer than the first edition!
This book is a fast-paced spiral into drug crazed insanity. It's a true story that will blow your mind. Having read the first edition years ago, I decided to try the second, which includes even more stories than the first and even crazier! Attwood really takes you there with his descriptions. For example "Next room. Fashion show. A stage lit pink and blue by filtered spotlights fixed to metal ladder structures. A woman struts on the runway in a tight shirt with silver flames, a jacket dangling from her elbows, blue leopard print with combed white plush drooping from the bottom, bright-pink patent vinyl trousers completing the look. Primo walks on in a white suit hand-painted with orange and green stripes and spots, his torso naked and hairless, carrying a tray with glasses and a pitcher patio set, seven-inch-thick platform heels on circus shoes, with grey vacuum cleaner tubes spiralling around his ankles. A woman in a white faux-rabbit-fur bolero crop jacket over nude breasts sashays with strength and confidence, a Betty Boop tattoo peeking out of white thong panties, curves dressing her up."
I highly recommend this, and the new edition of hard time.

would have benefited from a British narrator
don't get me wrong by the title. I really enjoyed the book, after watching shaun on some podcasts I had to get the audio book and wasn't disappointed, the story is gripping and larger than life. It lacked a tiny bit of cohesion in the way it jumped about the timeline of events in some places and could have used some more framing in that vein, but that didn't ultimately detract from how much I enjoyed the listen. the performance was ok but was a little monotone for my taste and in some places lacking emotion, and an american talking in liverpudlian slang was quite strange haha. I can't help but feel getting a Scouse to narrate the book or maybe shaun himself would have made the listen way more immersive. these negative points do not detract from it massively however and I've just downloaded the other book in the series available on audible.

Good - shame about the narrator.
The story was good.
The narrator was awful. So many times I had to grit my teeth in an attempt to stay with it.
If I heard “Sally said, Wild Man said, Acid Joey said, so and so said” once more it would of been turned off. A shame really as I did really like the story.
